Decided to work on some leaks!

Hi guys, I wanted to tell everyone thanks for the replies on my charging situation. It is now charging 7.1 at the battery, and I don't have to polarize it every time I get on the tractor.

It has poured rain here, so it is going to be several days before I can do my next project. So I decided to take the time to fix the valve cover gaskets. When I took the Manifold off. the back 2 nuts were not even tight. I took them off with my fingers, no wrench. The manifold gasket was blown out at #4. These old tractors are tough. It was running pretty well like that.

My gaskets will be here in about a hour. I bought my brass manifold nuts, checked the torque specs 27lbs. I even bought some rubber washers to put under the nut and washer on the valve covers. I plan on using a little thread sealer on the valve cover stud. Everything is painted and waiting.

You guys see anything I have missed? Or anything that will help me out any?

LOL! I save those for after the work is done. If I drink those during the work, after a bit I am like screw it, or I start throwing wrenches.
 

i'm curious. did u not hear the exhaust leak? i had the same issue, minus the loose nuts, and i knew about it because of the sound it made.

If you exhaust was so loose, you could have some serious damage to the block around #4. Check this out carefully. Putting a new gasket and even a new manifold on over a badly corroded block just leads to the new gasket failing faster.

The blocks can be repaired. Let's hope yours is ok. But check back here if you need help on repairing the block.
 
I cleaned the block with a 3m medium grey roloc disk. It was smooth as a babies butt, no pitting. Same with the manifold. I didn't hear any exhaust leak, but I did just last week start noticing black soot on the back of the block. This engine had been rebuilt at some point. I think they didn't torque the nuts tight enough and they started backing off,or the owner before me started to fix the oil leak then decided to sell it.

Since I noticed the soot, and fixed very soon after, I think I dodged a bullet. It wasn't run for any period of time like that. That and I wanted to get rid of the oil leak from the valve covers.
