8N won't start

My later model 8N ran fine when I parked it for the winter two years ago. When I started it up the next spring it fired up and ran
great...... for about a minute and then died like I had shut the key off. It hasn't started since then. It had spark but I thought it was a little week. I have replaced plugs, points, condenser, new copper core wires, cap, rotor, and two coils. I also replaced the battery
cables with heavy guage cables and installed a new style starter drive. The carburetor had been rebuilt the previous summer. The fuel
tank had premium fuel in it. I have shut the fuel off to the carburetor and tried starting fluid. Still no start, it just gives a half
hearted try. I have not checked the compression with a guage but plugging the spark plugs with my finger shows compression. It also
cranks like the compression is fine. It has spark that looks sufficient and I have tried hooking the coils up both ways. I don't think
it is a fuel problem because it ran fine until it died and I have often left fuel in all winter or all summer with no problems. I'm
going to try pull starting it later this evening when I have some help.

Any ideas.

Bottom line, it either has good spark or it doesn't.

If It does, AND it has working valves and compression, then it should start on starting fluid unless it is out of time, in which case it should fart and bellow and maybee kick back or buck a bit.

Post back.

Is it possible for an 8N to slip the timing similar to a timing chain slipping on a car engine? If I can find my timing lite I will try checking the timing.

well, it has no timing chain to slip, but the distribuitor on a side mount can slip or be turned.. etc.

No timing chain, gears, if the distributor was loosened and turned it, it could be out of time.

If you have not removed the distributor, I would do a compression check. fingers lie!

I found TDC on the flywheel and checked the distributor. It appears to be in time at least close enough to run. I just sprayed some carburetor cleaner in the carburetor while cranking it over with the key off. Maybe I have some sticking valves and that will free them up. I'll let it set and soak for a while.

If I had an inkling it might have a stuck valve or 3, I'd bite the bullet and pull the valve covers. From there you got some access to spray loosen up oil.

I got it running. It must have been sticking valves. I need to look into the carburetor. The throttle plate is sticking at a very high idle. I put a new oil guage on it. 15 psi at idle, 30 psi revved up. Is this ok? It was warm but not hot.

Now I need to replace the amp guage. It still has the original guage with a single wire running through two loops on the backside. I will have to add a wire to the new guage.

:15 psi at idle, 30 psi revved up. Is this ok?"

YES.

"I will have to add a wire to the new guage. "

Or just cut the old one in two and connect each end to one of the new amp gauge terminals.
