[b:326cf9e667][i:326cf9e667]Thank God I have good chains, and a 'Tractor Jack' to help install them!!!
These dang chains are really heavy! The 'T' jack, makes putting on the chains a lot easier.
Cain't lift what I used to.....getting too old, and tired.

Well...you are the same age I am, and I cry with you.
All the things I used to do, and enjoyed doing, seems to elude me these days. Does not help much, with the stuff that has been going on here for the last four + yrs.
Your 76 yrs., sound like mine at this point.
Happy B-day.!!!
Hope I'm not late with that....never can remember the date, but soon after mine (I think!!????)

Friend forever!!

Hear you loud and clear. Spent yesterday afternoon cutting up a couple big oaks that developed root rot and blew over. In years past I would have piled the tops and had them ready to burn as soon as we had a good snow cover. Instead I culled the firewood (talk about heavy!!!) and called a local tree man - he and his boys will be here with rakes and the chipper this afternoon ;-) ;-)

When you get old just think like Grandpa!!
Grandma and Grandpa was sitting on the porch rocking, chickens walking around in the yard, rooster comes around the corner of the house
and top a hen. He finishes his business with her and looks around and tops another hen. After this happens five or six times Grandma looks
over at Grandpa and says, don't you wish you could do that!! He replies, I probably could if I had a different hen every time !!!! Gcm

To put my chains on I spread them out on the ground, then position the tractor tire on top of the chains near one end. I then wire the end of the chains onto the rim/tire, then drive forward pulling the chains up over the tire. After that is done all that is left is to do is latch the chains together. I really don't do this very often, because I usually leave the chains on year round. That is if I don't have to drive the tractor on the road for some reason.

HC;
Wish I had enough time to play 9 holes of golf.....when ya got a 24/7 job, taking care of the wife, no time to be playing golf!!!
My clubs have been stored in the storeroom for 4 + yrs.
Pocket pool, don't even excite me now-days!!!

Hermie looks "snug as a bug in a rug," GB! Reminds me I need to do my end-of-season service, cap the PTO and put the backblade on…

I plan on chaining mine this weekend. But I have to use a floor jack and jackstands to get mine up off the floor.
And yes, even at 42 yrs old, the chains are heavy.

I'm 59 now, and was throwing tire chains on 38" tires 10-12 years ago. Now I hate the thought of removing the chains on 28" wheels, because I'll have to put them back on someday. That's why I leave them on year round. Looks funny while raking hay though.

Note to you Old Dudes, I will be 76 on my next birthday and i can still do all the same things I could at 50....it just
takes a lot longer....a whole lot longer.

I'm so old I have to take half a Viagra every morning just so I don't tinkle on my feet.

I am not sure about the tired part but have the old and honorary part down purty pat... I am mad I did'N figger it our sooner...

Hi GB -- Hermie's looking good! You're in Montana, right, so I'm assuming you're a snow-removal expert :) I see you have duo-grip chains? I was thinking of getting a set for my 860, but I wasn't sure whether I should go the extra step and get them with v-bars or not. Do you have a suggestion? Thanks! I could skip v-bars and get duo-ladder too I suppose.

We're in upstate NY by the way, and the driveway is gravel. Cheers!

Gary, I never thought much of those 'tractor jacks' but I do see where one would be handier than using a floor jack for installing chains, like I've been doing for years.

Josh;
EXPERT???? Don't think so!! I just do what I was taught, and besides.....an Expert is just a 'Drip under pressure'!
I would say that if you have a lot of humid/cold air, with lots of ice forming on the driveway,....you might think about going the extra step and add the V-Bars. duo-ladders won't really be much added traction, in the case of ice on the gravel.
That said.....I think if your driveway is steep, you will get slipage, no matter what chains you have.....UNLESS you have loaded tires, and/or wheel wieghts on the rears. JMHO
The Duo-links you see on Hermie, are very good, and I don't have much trouble, even with ice under the snow. (Just go at an even throttle, and I think you will be OK.)
Expect a healthy bill tho, when ya go to pay for them.....They ain't cheap!!!!!!!!!!

Chained mine up yesterday afternoon during a snow squall. Didn't use the jacks though. Layed them out on the driveway, backed onto them and chained together. My 10 year old daughter came out to help. I think she just wanted to get her hands rusty and dirty!

Can you get the chains latched with gloves on? Every time it was cold enough that I needed to wear gloves while putting chains on, I would get at least one glove caught in the latch, and couldn't get it loose without unlatching the chain. One year I just left the glove there. It was just a yellow rag by the time spring came. Now I leave my chains on all year.

I'm one of these guys that rarely uses gloves. Even welding...I'd rather not. But as I get older and my arthritis tries ever harder to grab hold of me I do wear them when it's bitter cold. I'm outside a lot being a nature nerd. Guess I just don't realize the cold is there.

I dread getting old. Currently only 24yrs right now, but the Military put a hurtin' on me. Got a bad lower back, knees, elbows and shoulders!

he alternative is not real attractive!!!!

Hi Gary -- happy Thanksgiving! Thanks for the advice. All things being equal (more or less), I guess I'll go for the duo-grips like yours. You're right, they're not cheap! Happy tractoring.

I was one of those guys too. The cold was just something that was always there during winter. My hands hurt every day now. I can't even close my hands in a fist in the mornings. I spend about fifteen minutes every morning getting my fingers working before I get out of bed. My father had the same problem. He told me that the joints will quit hurting when they don't move anymore. Getting old isn't for sissy's.
