Off topic- Flashing for polarity

Forum,
Need to flash a Lincoln Weldanpower 225 to achieve magnetism in the field. Not sure of what posts are positive or negative to flash correctly. Any and all info is appreciated. This is a 1962 vintage welder.

Hi Mr. T.

Since the machine is an alternator (slip rings) not a generator (commutator) there is nothing to "polarize". In a previous thread you said you were getting small sparks between the welding cables. That indicates sufficient residual magnetism. You also stated the unit has been sitting a long time. I have found that the slip rings will oxidize enough to prevent the rectified current from the stationary winding which provides the excitation current from getting to the field winding. If you look at the slip rings and find the color to be dark brown, that is very likely the problem. I usually use Scotchbrite to polish the slip rings, but in severe cases I have had to resort to using 600 grit wet or dry sand paper. You need to polish the oxide off until the slip rings are a bright shiny new copper color.

D,
Thanks for the reply! Your advice was helpful. I had polished the tarnished slip rings a few days ago. I worked on it again last night and followed all the leads as best I could and tightened down a very loose rusted nut on a slip ring brush terminal. I also tested what I could with an ohm meter and got readings but not sure what to do with the numbers. It is interesting this Lincoln welder has its own exciter system- commutator and field magnets. High tech!
Thanks again!
