What was this used for?

Probably a loader frame. You can see the mounting bracket for the loaders hydraulic pump in front of the grill.

Carl,
I went and pulled out my parts books. Here is what I found. In 1946 the engine block was part number 9N 6010, and was , of course, for the 9N/2N tractors. In 1949 the block number is 8N 6010, with the note; 8N, 8NAN from Serial 42,161. So, as I have suspected, the first 8N's DO NOT have 8N cast on the block. I have seen 8N's below that SN, 1045 and 11750, and neither have the 8N on the the block. Thus it would seem that the part number change was ONLY to indicate the adding of the lettering 8N to the casting. Part of the Ferguson "purge" started with Henry Ford II telling Harry Ferguson that the "handshake deal" was over?!?

Now in the May 1950 parts book, the "first" 8N block has the part number 8N 6010-A still with a note showing the starting number is 42,161 but also indicating 263,843 is the ending SN. There is then a listing of part number 8N 6010-B with the note; 8N, 8NAN after Serial 263,844. So Ford did not use the suffex "A" until the part had been modified in some way. Then when the suffex "B" part was created/made/added they added the suffex "A" to the old part number. A study in the parts books of other parts that have been modified will confirm this, I am confident.

The 8N-B was used to distinguish the "new" side mount distributor block fron the older front mount distributor block. The move of the generator to the left side meant that the crankcase breather/filler tube had to be moved back some making the block different, the second version (or modification B) of the engine block casting for the 8N tractor.

In the 1953 parts book the block part number is 8N 6010-C. And the text indicates that it is for 9N, 9NAN, 2N, 2NAN, 8N, 8NAN and notes that only 8N oil pump gears are to be used with this part. The part numbers 8N 6010, 8N 6010-A and 8N 6010-B do not appear at all.

I have not yet seen an 8N-C block, so I have no idea what modification was done to change the block necessitating the change to C. Does someone else know?!? I would like to find out myself.

Regards,
Larry

Ohhh, duh! Didn't even cross my mind for a loader frame. I saw the pump bracket but didn't put 2&2 together. Didn't notice the lower loader brackets either. I should pick it up, get it running and resell...if they don't have the loader I would keep the loader frame and modify it to mount an old 6' Meyer snow plow on my 2N.
