Tuning up my 9n

A little more diagnosis is in order. How long does it run before
it quits? Does fuel flow out of the carb drain at a steady stream
able to fill a pint jar in about 2 minutes? When it quits, does it
still have spark that will jump a 1/4 gap at all four plug wires?

6 volt or 12 volt?

Don?t guess at the cause of the problem; guessing can get expensive. And leave you breathless chasing every guess.......it could be this, it could be that......just troubleshoot the problem and leave the guess work for buying Lottery tickets.

As soon as the tractor stops running, not 5 minutes later, check for spark and fuel. (see tip # 13 )

You need to answer 2 questions before you do anything else:

With the bolt in the carb bowl removed and the gas on, will the fuel flow fill a pint jar in less than 2 minutes?

Next, get out your adjustable gap spark checker * , open the gap to 1/4", hook it up, turn the key on and crank the engine. Does the spark jump 1/4"? Post back with the answers.

And do not buy a new part for the tractor until you can answer this question: how do I know the part on the tractor is defective?

* Don't own an adjustable gap spark checker? Buy one! Not a test light! Until then, take an old plug, open the gap 1/4" ground it to the head & look for spark. It?s not the color of the spark that counts; it?s the distance it jumps.

Get out your 9N Service Manual and I&T F-04 Manual and use as a guide. Avoid the guessing games as Bruce said. A concise, systematic procedure to determine the root cause is the key to problem solving. First up is to verify fuel to carb is correct. Remove bottom drain plug as shown, or loosen fuel line at brass elbow inlet and then open Sediment Bulb 2 Full Turns. If fuel flow stutters, hesitates, starts and stops, you have an obstruction in the screen or screens on sediment bulb. The large round horizontal brass one can be cleaned by removing the glass bowl, and cleaning with lacquer thinner and compressed air, or better yet, replacing it and the cork gasket with new parts. The internal vertical screen is on the fuel inlet stem and can only be cleaned by removing the entire sediment bulb. You must first drain he gas from tank before removing it. Originally these screens were soldered on, but new aftermarket ones sold today are glued on. Cleaning is a delicate process using lacquer thinner or carb cleaner, but be very light on the compressed air as you could blow the screen right off.

I agree with what Bruce said, except check for spark first, before it can cool down. You can always check for fuel flow later.
