Ford 2N Steering

Hello,

I have a 1947 Ford 2N, I recently bought. I have explored these forums for a while in my pursuit of fixing issues on the tractor.

I am vaguely mechanically inclined, and I see this as a project to learn from. I do have the IT Shop manual, Service Manual, and Parts manual. I have bought all of my parts from this website. I did a search to
find some info on my question, but couldn't find anything.

Long story short, I pulled apart my steering box and the steering shaft was busted up (teeth, upper threads) and the Sector gears in the steering had chipped teeth as well, so I bought the new sector gears
(RH/LH ) and a new Steering shaft along with new bearings etc.

I may be an idiot in this matter, but looking for help.

I can not get the bottom bearing cone on the shaft, do I need to get it pressed on or am I completely wrong?

Also how do I remove and install the upper and lower bearing cups?

Thank you for the help.

Hi txrocket51, I'll try to help. I didn't have to replace those parts on my 2N, so don't have any experience. But it appears that cone and bearing need to be slid down from the top end. I doubt that you have to press it on that distance. But, perhaps you do. Questions, how did you get the old one off and does the bearing fit over the shaft? Could they have sent you the wrong cone? If the fit is close, maybe you could put the shaft in the freezer and the cone in a warm oven then slip it down quickly.

On the old one, it slid of, just came of will a little bit of a pull. It is almost like the new bearing cone is too small, but in reading about bearings etc from what I gathered it seemed like it is supposed to be a tight fit, so I've gone back and forth.

On the one hand I wonder if the bearing cone is somehow to "small" to fit on the shaft, on the other hand I ordered the shaft and steering kit from the same place, but even the old bearing cone won't go onto the new shaft.-- So I wonder if it is just tight enough that it is a pain to get on, I can get it on the upper portion just fine, but only get it to about where the thread stops and the straight shaft begins.

I did look at the part number on the cone and it is marked as the correct part.

I think I am going to try and freeze the shaft and heat the cone as you mentioned and go from there.

I appreciate the help.
