Gentlemen and ladies, what is the correct lubricant for an 8n, crankcase, steering box and
transmission/hydraulics. Inherited a tractor and completing the restoration for a late cousin. Regards Ray.

Depends on your climate.
Here in Michigan I use UTF that meets Ford Spec M2C134D in the
transmission/hydraulics/rear end. All one common 5 gallon sump.
You could use 10W-30 or 10/15W-40 in the engine crankcase.
I use 80/90 oil in the steering box on mine but many use EP
grease, e.g. cornhead grease, so they don't leak as easily.

Get the essential Owner/Operator/Service Manuals if you don't already have them. Engine oil runs the gamut on what people use. SAE-30, 15W-40, 10W-30, 10-W40 seem to be the popular ones, and all work fine. Hydraulic oil too -SAE-90 API GL-1 Mineral Gear Oil works fine. TSC sells the same thing labeled 'specially formulated for old Ford Tractors', but nothing special about it - it's all the same. I'm in Michigan too and have used both the NAPA (in bulk) and the TSC stuff with no issues. Steering box lube like Royse said as well, but some prefer #00 EP pourable oil. Many of these old N's have worn out steering boxes as they simply were neglected over the years. There's a bearing, seals, and a bushing that wear out and no amount of lube is going to fix those. Some of us have altered the lube plugs with a Zerk fitting to make lubing easier and less messy. The 8N had two steering boxes -early and late. The early used a 1/4-NPT pipe plug, the late used a 7/16-14 Hex Head Bolt. You need to know where and how each of those fluids goes into when filling, again, manuals are essential and have capacities. Don't forget coolant.
