Starter Switch Replacement

Hello everybody and good morning from rainy southern Appalachia...The starter button on my 1951 8N is beginning to fail, and needs to be replaced. The starting
setup on my tractor is a bit unusual and was set up that way when i bought the tractor 15 years ago. The starter button has no markings on it at all so there is
no voltage or amperage or manufacturer indicated. Can anyone suggest how to find a replacement? There are similar looking buttons at Lowe's, but i'm not sure if
they'd be suitable for this application. Thank you

Well, that's not oem.

You may want to consider putting it all back to the way Henry made it.

Google "wiring diagrams JMOR" to find the diagram for your tractor.

If your neutral safety switch has been removed, the tractor will start in gear; see tip # 28.

Been raining here outside of Richmond for 3 days too. Looks like you're in for more of it.

Thanks...i would like to get everything back to original configuration. The tractor as it sits now definitely can be started in gear.
Heading over to the Emporia area tommorrow...have you heard anything about the rain/ flood conditions there?

No, Emporia is 80 miles south. I'd check w/ VDOT for sure. 58 is probably ok, but getting to 58 might be fun.

Generic starter switch, not OEM. Nothing special about it.

If you want to simply replace the switch (no doubt, it will start in gear), take the switch to NAPA. Any decent counter person can match it up.

No doubt it's been converted to 12V. OEM is 6V.

It can be configured to start using the OEM starter switch whether 6V or 12V but you will likely need to change the solenoid.

i GOT TWO 12 volts 8N's running with the OEM 6 volt solenoid. They don't care about voltage. neither does the OEM starter switch or starter for that matter.

My '52 8n had an old lawnmower ignition switch when I bought it. It would most certainly start in gear. This being my first tractor in my 62 years, I didn't know the original was a safety switch. Thanks to Bruce and a few others AND the fact my starter switch was still good, I now have it converted to 12v and all is right with the world (electrically speaking on my tractor anyway). Mine also had the wrong solenoid, so I went to Tractor Supply and got an OEM solenoid and it works fine on my 12v conversion.

FJ, if your old switch is still on top of the tranny, you might get lucky like I did and find that it still works. If so, rewire it and get the correct solenoid and you'll be good to go.
