Hello everybody, I'm having a tough time tying to read the engine block number. I'm pretty sure its a '48 8N. can anyone read the numbers? Thanks.

I can't read the numbers, but I see stars, so an engine prior to
serial number 433578. Try cleaning it off a bit and using some
chalk or something similar to fill in the stampings to read it.

First clean off the paint with some Naval Jelly. Do not use anything abrasive like a file, sandpaper, or wire brush. Use a toothbrush. Wash off with a solvent like mineral spirits -charcoal lighter fluid or paint thinner will work they're all the same stuff. Let dry. Take a piece of white chalk and rub across the boss. You may be able to closely see the numbers now. The *STAR prefix and suffix indicates steel cylinder liners were used originally, but does NOT mean that they are in it now. I see an '8' with a space then the 'N' which is what all 8N's used. The Ford hand stamps for block s/n's used the capital letter "I" for the numeral '1' and a lower case letter 'b' for the numeral '6' and the inverted 'b' for the numeral '9'. It almost appears that one or two of the digits have been struck twice but not going to say for sure. ALL Ford vehicles used the same system of marking the engine blocks, not just tractors. Note the effective date on this Service Bulletin:
