Is this a problem?

Other than a leak, which I can prevent, is there any reason I should be worried about this crack? It's a '47 8N.

Welcome to the forum - Glad to have you!

If the tractor had a separate frame, the crack wouldn't bother me at all. Perhaps it's camera angle but it appears the top portion has shifted forward? Having said that, it's probably been that way for years. A loader will add stress to the block.

Repair it first and see how it holds up. V-grind the parting lines inside and out. Clean surface with brake cleaner and JB Weld it back together. As the repair is on the vertical, the JB Weld will run so you will need to engineer a form or dam to keep it in place until it sets up.

Block sand the gasket surface flat and keep your fingers crossed.

Thanks Bill. I think there was a flaw in the casting. When I pulled the rear cover and saw that "step" on the left, I thought it had shifted. But removing the front cover proved otherwise. You can't see it in my photo, but it's lined up perfectly on the forward edge, so the step at the rear edge must have been cast that way. May have been the cause of the crack in the first place.

No evidence of a loader ever being on this one, but who knows what it's been through in 71 years.

The crack is now moot. I'm not going to bother to do anything with it. Maybe if I'm energetic over the winter and decide to do something about this newest surprise, I'll take care of it then.

(quoted from post at 23:57:28 09/16/18) Metal shavings of that size in the oil pan would concern me too. Where is the screen?

Possibly still in there, most likely missing. I wasn't aware there was supposed to be one, I just bought this thing. I will check when I get a chance to see if it came loose and is sitting in the pan.

Any crack is a cause for concern due to propagation but this one has already gone as far as it can go and it is not really a structural area.

I would not worry about it.

Hi Dean. I feel the same way. Gonna RTV the face to seal it, put it back together and run it until that bronze material all ends up in the pan. :)

That might not be too much longer.

Didn't realize the shavings were brass - Most likely from the oil pump bushing. How's the oil pressure?

I doubt they are preventing you from sharing "the details" anymore than they prevented you from making this highly inappropriate post. Check your computer skills.

Trying to post the results led consistently to a warning that I was using a bad word. Yet nnalertwit works. Gotta love that. No, there were no bad words in the original post. Just some manure filter that got triggered, but literally stated "we're not going to tell you want word we don't like". So, yeah, nnalertwit pretty much sums it up.

If your goal is to post rather than complain a binary chop search will quickly find the offending word. Like I said - computer skills.

No offense, but a binary search is based on searching [b:5a986cb214][i:5a986cb214]for[/i:5a986cb214] [/b:5a986cb214]something. One has to have a target in order to find it. Perhaps I am missing something, but don't see such capability built into this site.

Here's a quick reference: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Binary_search_algorithm. Just a tad more complicated than basic computer skills. :)
