I want a Dell--had good service from several so why change??Don't even know wat to look for..Don't care about lightning fast, dont play games-dont store tons of anything--just want something that works---problem with this one is that the operating system is vista and is no longer supported by chrome Opera did no better---most sites i try to go to says server not found.--I have no clue about this stuff-just know that when I click an icon I want it to go there and work..YT for example works sometime but maybe half the time it says server not found so I try again and again and if I'm lucky it will finally open--same with facebook, ebay, amazon etc..Desktops are relatively inexpensive so if that will solve the problem I am ready to just replace this one and move on..This one is a Dell Inspiron-been good for several, several yrs..any suggestions from any angle appreciated.. Thanks

I too have good luck with Dell's but I buy the business class.
Durable and fast. Built for reliability, not for gaming.
The graphics are not high end but who cares if you're not gaming?
They were built to run 24/7 in office environments and take the
abuse of users who didn't have to pay for them to begin with.

Shoot me an email. I might be able to find you a good, used,
legally licensed, Windows 7 machine at a pretty reasonable price.

we had dell's until we bought this hp a few years ago. like you we really do not need much. we run into the same problems you have and I blame win 10 but folks here say it is aol's problem. whatever is to blame I find different times of the day can effect how the machine/system works. I also find if I have a problem signing on I restart the puter and that sometimes helps. sometimes It helps to sign off a web site and sign back on. seems like a clearer channel/path.

I will go to my grave never understand the "techie" age of humanity.

I also have had many dells over the years with mostly good experiences. Kids though think Dell is not good and have moved onto other brands like HP. Glad they have their own opinions and exercise it.

Whats chars my rear end is all the garbage that comes on these computers when you buy them new. I wish they would come with bare bones and let me put my own software.

I am typing this using a one year old low end Dell Inspiron. I can understand your desire to migrate to a more current version of the operating system but neither new hardware nor a new operating system is not going to fix your "server not found" problems. That is almost surely a network problem (DNS lookup failure) outside the computer - your network router or ISP are the most likely points of failure. The DNS service from my ISP (Verizon) is very shaky and I have the same problems on a recurring basis.

not computer related but a bit ago I fried up some sausage and onions. "eye-god" woodrow it smells good in here.

I bought a new laptop last February. Though I've bought from Dell in the past, and been well satisfied, Dell is not what it once was. After research, of both Dell and HP, I bought a HP. I bought their absolute top of the line laptop with all of the options and bought a color laser printer at the same time.

Next time I will go back to Dell.

Here is a different angle from most.

My HP was originally Vista back dated to XP when I got the machine about 4-5 years ago.
I Installed Lubuntu 12.04LTS and it works great. I will have to upgrade my OS before long as 12.04 will no longer be supported. So now I have another machine with Lubuntu 16.04
to see how I like that. It should work on this machine but have not tried it.
There are many options other than a new/newer computer and MSFT products.
Good luck!

Any computer is a bit like our tractors, from time to time they give was problems. I have had my dell for a number of years and had several problems which Dell took care of. I like the suppport I got from Dell.
How about upgrading your computer to windows 10? I am very happy with it and google chrome.

I have used Gateway , Dell, HP both desk top and laptop and working with Microsoft was the pits, So Son got Me a real nice iMac
Sure it was a little fun getting use to , but I was not getting 1-4 updates per week from Microsoft. I have had vista, winds 10 ect ect
You might look at getting a Apple

Just went through the same drill. And like Dean, it was Dell or HP; I went w/ the HP.

I got a laptop w/ as much memory as I could get, (HP Envy x360 15.6" Touch-Screen Laptop - Intel Core i7 - 16GB Memory - 1TB Hard Drive ) not because of what I put on it, but because of what the websites & software designers put on it. Simply put, my 10 year old Dell desktop w/ Windows 7 was fine for my use, but it was getting slower & slower. It finally got so it would lock up & not even shut down w/o pulling the plug on it. And the software was no longer supported by MS.

Besides, w/ a $10 wireless mouse, the laptop is just like a desktop but I can take it w/ me, unlike a desktop. Hopefully, I'll get 10 years out of this one.

Do yourself a huge favor. Get a Mac. Much simpler, much more reliable, lasts longer, few if any operating problems ever.
I have an iBook I bought over ten years ago that is still running. I currently use a MacBook Air. I think it is wonderful. Macs cost more, but their longevity and trouble free performance make them a bargain in the long run.
And in spite of what people may tell you, the transition to the different operating system is quite simple.
No one, however, takes my advice, because they think Mac owners are snobs, or they won't spend the money to "do it right the first time."

I bought a Dell inspiron 20 back on the 4th of july with Win 10 . I can really recommend it ... I did'nt even see much difference between XP and 10 it seems intuitive ....

Thanks but I won't be doing the Mac thing..I'm much too old tolearn all new stuff..See-I already have no clue what I am talking about......

Thanks--will be staying with Dell or HP--I am computer stupid and wioll continue to do only what I HAVE to do at work on my computer--at home just no need to start over ...will stay with windows based system..

Here, here Wayne!

I've been Mac since 1988 but in november 2013 while in bed nursing a broken leg bone by the hip ball, all I had was my friend's Windows laptop that she had never used and so I gritted my teeth and learned it quickly enough.

But I was flabbergasted by the relentless OS updates, etc., etc., etc., that went on for hours [b:1465f9e422]whether I liked it or not[/b:1465f9e422]. Whenever a Mac OS security update or whatever was offered one ALWAYS had the option to accept or pass on it. Another good reason why the Mac was always famous for being "user friendly'. Non user INVASIVE would be more like it.

I understand what you are saying. I am nearly 78 myself. But note that I already said that the transition is much easier than you might think. I will add to that that I used Windows for years before moving to Mac. I can tell you it is a lot easier to go from Windows to Mac than to go from Mac to Windows. Windows is vastly less user friendly.
Nevertheless, I can understand you aren't going to change. I am used to hearing things pretty much like you have said, and said so in my earlier remarks.

"but I was not getting 1-4 updates per week from Microsoft"

I've seen this happen too. It is caused by one of two things.
Either the updates did not install correctly the first time or
there was an update to the previous update that you didn't
need until you had the first one. The latter would stop.

From XP through Windows 7, Microsoft only released patches
once a month. On the second Tuesday of every month.
Except for critical updates that may have also been released
on the fourth Tuesday of the month. If you were getting them
every week there was something wrong with your PC.
A good tech could have fixed it.

BTW, Microsoft support is expensive. Except for patching.
Automatic update support used to be free if you called.
I can't say for sure if it still is, but it may be worth checking.

Thanks everyone for the responses--wife is very good on computer stuff--she finally gave me a few minutes of her time and did some kind of updates..It is not real fast but has not bombed out at all like it was doing..can live with it if it will keep on doing like it is now..

kEEPING A COMPUTER CLEAN is the main thing. I use CCLeaner to get rid of a lot of junk files that build up and slow a computer down. I have my computer so that it does upgrades all on it own, works for me. Firewall on and a GOOD virus program. I like windows defender.

Bragged too quick--after it sat overnite it is doing the same thing "Server not found"--did that one try on YT then next try went right in like it was ok--wife wanted me to try firefox--clicked on that icon and it popped up whate screen and said server not found---facebook, YT, ebay etc etc all worked fine last night after she uploaded the last two or three windows updates that appeared to have not uploaded from the day before--now this morning server not found-server not found...even a message a few minutes ago said computer had been locked and to call some toll free number immediately...sounds like virus mess I guess????

Sounds like you have been hit with ransomware, you may be in trouble
I would try to download malware bites

https://www.malwarebytes.com/mwb-download/
this version is free

Number 1: The "computer locked" is probably a malware infection from one of the sites you visited. You or your wife may be able to remove it if you can identify exactly what piece of malware is responsible and use an uninfected computer to find instructions and/or download a utility to do so.

Number 2:

"Server not found" means your computer is unable to locate the IP address for the server name. That is typically a problem outside the computer but given you probably have a malware infection the malware may have munged your Internet configuration parameters to sabotage name resolution. That is a pretty common ploy and easily identified if you know your way around the network conficuration settings. If you don't you are going to need knowledgeable help. Another option is to restore the syatem from a known good checkpoint. You do have system backups don't you?

Number 3:

[u:c6c7e0c7c8]TURN ON WINDOWS DEFENDER SO THIS DOESN"T HAPPEN AGAIN.[/u:c6c7e0c7c8].

It comes with Windows 10 and is "free" as are the updates.

Wife ran malwarebytes -it found 275 or more pup & trojan files that it quarantined. It said another scan would run in the morning..Do I need to do anything else for now? Thanks for your help.

If it isn't already on or unless you have some third party package running turn on Defender.

I would also download and ccleaner to clean up the register also.
I use the paid for version of malwarebytes and it is full time protection.

My windows defender blocks several severe threats a few days ago. I like defender.

Wife has been trying to turn on Defender and can't--it says it is off by group. My operating system is vista--wife and I both been using Avast and she also had 360 PUP and Trojan files that it quarantined..Her computer was acting normal but decided to run malwarebytes just for the heck of it..hers operating system is Windows 10..

She cant get it to turn on--says it is off by Group ..Wonder if that means it is overridden by Avast that she and I both have been using--her operating system is windows 10-mine is Vista..She saw on line that any anti-virus program would block defender..

they don't like the competition, if your works good, god,if you continue to have problems get rid of it and try defender. works good for me on win 10.

Defender on Vista is not like Defender on Windows 10.
On XP/Vista/7 it was anti-spyware only so you still need
an antivirus program for full protection.
On Windows 8 and above it is a full fledged antivirus program.
It replaced Microsoft Security Essentials for home users and
Forefront Endpoint Protection for the corporate versions.

(quoted from post at 16:40:42 12/11/16) Defender won't turn on..guess it is because we are using Avast anti-virus

When you activate Avast it sets a group policy registry key that prevents Defender from running. The idea is it's not a good thing to have two AV applications running in the background at the same time.

Decide which one you want and can the other one.
