1800 steering

I got my pup from a lady with an 1800. It's about 5 hours away and I have not seen it..Her daughter said the steering wheel goes around about 5 1/2 times and stops but wheels do not move. She also said it feels like it's grinding or gears catching. Any ideas? Did the come with more than one steering system? Thank you Paul

Quite likely that either the center steering arm or shaft down to it out of the cylinder is broken. I've had both happen.

Are you talking about the steering arm on the steering box?
They also had a loader on it but took it off.

Yes,the one that the tie rod ends hook to. I broke the shaft that goes through that one time on the 1850 too.

Thank you rrlund. I tried to explain it to her. Tractor has been sitting awhile. Hoping she will get it started. It's to far for me to just go play with it. Tried to get her to sell it to me but that's not happening yet.

Paul they did come with 2 different steering gears. On the A & B 1800 tractors there is a nut inside the steering gear that will let you turn the steering wheel with out wheel movement if the nut works very loose or comes off. You need a serial number to start with.

Thank you J. I will see if I can get it. I'm trying to get more pics. I'm assuming it has power steering but she was not sure. Also she doesn't know if anyone checked the hydraulic oil. I do have a shop manual. I better see if I can find some pics!

(quoted from post at 05:50:29 11/16/17) Power steering was standard on 1800 rowcrop models.
Ok. Thank you J..I don't know how you retain all your knowledge but I sure appreciate it. I told her to check the fluid. It's missing the cap and dipstick so will have to get one..

Hi Olliejunkie,

The Oliver 1800A series has the Gemmer Power Steering Head.

We have parts on stock here for that unit........if the trouble is with the head!!!

HI john,

THANKS FOR YOUR POST.

Now, looking at the new posting, this 1800A with the problem has been updated to all hydraulic steering according to the photo.

Hello Phil
Do you carry parts for them as well. At this point I am hoping that it is just low on hydraulic oil. I dont if anyone checked it but I told her how. Wish it was closer so I could tinker with it. Paul

Hi Paul,

Unfortunately, I do not have parts for the all hydraulic steering.

My full focus is Co-op and Cockshutt built by Cockshutt between 1948 and 1962. the Cockshutt 500 series line built between 1958 and 1962 used the Gemmer built power steering head on their 550, 560, 570. 570S tractors. This same Gemmer PS unit was used on OLIVER late 770, 880, and all 1800A, and 1800B series OLIVER/COCKSHUTT tractors.

Was the loader hooked to remote outlets or hooked in to power beyond this shouldn't affect P/S but will other things when yo took loader off
