Hello and great place here, lots of great info. Now on to my problem Ive searched but came up with no answers. Im helping on a 1950T for a friend and its locked up in the trans, I was told that he was in the high side 5th gear going down the road and the rear wheels locked up. As from many others Ive read it will run but pulls down and wants to die when clutch is released, but it does roll and will not go into the high side now. I have removed the shifter and trans plate for a inspection but cant see anything jump out at me, I have it uncoupled from the engine and can get slight movement by shaking the input sprocket also the shift rods seem to be free. Any help would be great seems how this is the first 1950 Ive been into. Thanks Brian

When you say it will roll, you mean with the transmission in neutral? If so most likely the low range gear on the top shaft seized to the shaft. The hydraulic unit will need to come off and depending on what equipment you have you will need to either split the tractor or remove the engine unless tractor has neither a hydra-power or an over-under unit. Questions?

By top shaft your meaning input shaft and if that is correct would that be the gear right in front of the oiler. So Im on the same page it would be input sprocket....the first big gear then the shift ring then then one seized....if that makes sense....lol. If its behind the shift ring and in front of oiler that gear is blue in color and looks sharp on the teeth. Ok what would be a common cause it happens if fluid level is good and where would Id start to look for one. I do have the lift cover all loose and wont budge yet, is there any hidden bolts or only around the outside and it does have over under. Thanks again Brian

Their is one bolt in the rear of the top housing hide under the top link of the 3pt with the adjustment holes.Maybe 2 bolts I forget.

Yes imput shaft. Brian it has been over 41 years since I did this kind of work!. I would need to look at a picture. Do you have a shop manual? Take the transmission filter off and see if there is oil in it.

I had it happen to our 1950T and gear stuck to the shaft. I had to split the tractor and pull hydraulic housing and PTO. Make sure you put wooden wedges between wide front end and the frame to keep it from tipping. Trans lube pump failure was the cause on our T trans problem. Traded it in on a new White in 1989 but the 1950 T was my favorite tractor.

I got to talk to the guy and kinda give him a rough idea of cost to see if he wants to proceed, before it comes apart. Im in central iowa.

From reading and fast responses Id be safe to say its common...lol. Thanks for the advise this wont be my first split but reminder is always good and thanks for the reply.

It is not that common and look in the tub to see how you will be getting at the tub bolts. We had a stand made so we could split them and till we bought the special socket we busted a few sockets, 300 foot pounds on those bolts. Questions? My e-mail should be open. In my case it is not who knows because I do know! I worked for a good dealer! J.
