Oliver 70 RC Distributor

I'm restoring my dad's Oliver 70. It has a distributor but the copy of the service manual I have only addresses a magneto.

A few questions.

Timing. Should it be timed on the flywheel marks for the magneto or at some other position?

Gap width on the distributor points?

Thanks.

No 70 when new had a distributor. Those are all aftermarket applications. Do you have a Delco number? If you static time it at TDC it should run fine. A gap of from 16-18 for the points should also work.

Thanks.

I'll get the distributor number and post it. I set the points at .020 so I wasn't too far off.

I've completely rebuilt the engine and just got it running today. My dad bought this tractor new in 1949. We farmed in northwest Iowa. By the time I was old enough to drive it it was our yard tractor with a loader. We had a Sharlin (sp?) pto hydraulic pump on it with a single one way value. It had a trip bullet that you reset by backing up the tractor while lowering the bucket. When I cleaned off the bottom of the cast frame I had to chisel off about an inch of very hard mixure of silage, mud and cow poop.

He's now 95 years old and I want to get it all restored by next summer when he comes to visit, I live in Montana, and have him take it for a spin.

All my olivers are timed at TDC. If the mag impulse coupling fires any earlier, the starting handle is going to be rotating in the wrong direction!

That said, all these old tractors will be running slightly wrong because fuels have moved on over the years. They were likely set up for 70 octane rated fuel. Nearly all of mine are kero burners, so setting the timing for cold starting is fairly irrelevant. There should be a timing mark for adjusting the timing while running? Can't do better than that, I would think (as long as it doesn't kick back on cranking to start).

Alternatively, I might be setting the timing for best running position, as long as my arm is not going to be stretched by kick-back!
