Type of Oliver 70?

I recently purchased an oliver 70. The engine serial# is 228186 which should be a row crop. The frame of this tractor is a standard with smooth sides,(no industrial mounts). It has industrial fenders, a foot throttle, hand brake along with foot brakes, front drawbar, belt pulley, and pto. The motor serial indicates a 1939 row crop, but the axle carrier has part # F700 stamped in it which is a 1938 according to the parts book. On one side panel has the 70 row crop decal barely legible on in. Under the green paint is a red color which could be paint or may be a primer. I am looking for someone with knowledge about what I have, so I can decide how to restore this tractor. I saw one post that says oliver built a row crop 70 industrial. Just trying to figure it out. Are you used to the old Oliver parts identification numbers? It was a simple system when tractors were simple. 700 is the base number for an axle housing. The prefix letter changes with different tractor models the suffix letter is for variations in the part. Your number 700 was the base number for axle housings. The prefix letter F is for an Oliver standard. A rowcrop would be a letter B. There were at least 10 different suffix letters. Examples could be for a Cockshutt 70 or a housing for different length axles than what was a standard length for that model. I think someone put a different engine in that tractor.

The 70 which you have, could be an Oliver 25 (Airport Tub). As you stated there is Red paint under the green. I have restored one of my Oliver 25's this year, they are painted the same color as the Cockshutt 70's were painted (Red & Cream with black trim). As for the sheet metal both of my tractors have the same type sheet metal on them as your tractor. I am not aware of any Industrial 70 which has a hand brake, however Oliver did some unusual combinations when the need arised to put together tractors for delivery. Oliver 25's used as Tugs were some times equipped with hand brakes along with other special equipment. I would very much like to get detailed information about your hand brake on your tractor. Could you email me some pictures [email protected]
