I have a Oliver 1650 diesel with a wide front end. At the rear of the front wheel hubs there is a small pipe plug What is the purpose of the plug? Iss it to add a lubricant?
Thanks

Here's an old answer from former Oliver/White employee Dean Barker:

Some time before 1965, Oliver used oil to lubricate the front wheel bearings so the pipe plug was used to put oil into the hub. With the change to grease for front wheel bearing lubrication, the pipe plug was a carry-over as the tooling was all set up for the tapped hole. Later on the tooling was updated, so I removed the tapped hole from the hub. On my own 1655's, I drill and tap a hole for a grease zerk in the hub cap, and after the initial fill with grease, daily give the front wheels 3 or 4 pumps of grease. Any more pumps than that will blow out the seals as they will not pass grease like some will. Don't be afraid to torque up the adjusting nut on the front wheel bearings to about 20 ft-lb.

They ran a heavy gear oil. I've found that the end of the grease gun fits pretty snug in that hole. I pump the hub full until I can hear it crackling at the seal.
