Horsepower on mph pulling

It happens all the time. You can call it too much power or too little traction. It is of course more likely to happen on a softer track where in a stock class a nearly stock tractor can beat an enhanced tractor.

Yep. Seen it happen numerous times. Lower power tractor will bog down and keep going. Higher power tractor will have the governor open and break traction. Have seen drivers ride the brakes to try and load the engine more

I would always want more power. Need
enough to keep sled moving 4mph as long
as possible. Little might slide in for a
win every once in a while but BIG will
win most of the time. LOL

Yes, more is better. Just need some skill in using throttle. No skill needed if underpowered with no danger of overpowering track.

(quoted from post at 05:14:36 11/09/17) On 4mph fullcut pulling on 3500 to 5000 pound class, could to much hp make you spin out easier.

Since you are speed limited by the rules, assuming your tractor has enough HP to reach 4 MPH I don't see an advantage to having more power, speed wise. Also, once your tractor has enough HP to spin out I don't see an advantage to having more power....you are traction limited.

To your question; Yes, too much HP can make it easier to spin out. As you reach your traction limit you want to be careful to apply just the power to maintain the tire grip with the track as long as possible. Think of it as driving on snow or ice - you apply power carefully as to not spin the tires. Once you spin the tires you are stuck.

For example; a big HP tractor with a jumpy governor (operator) will be more likely to break traction early...spin out.

Yes, And what you have to remember first and foremost is that you don't HAVE TO go 4 mph you can go 2.5 and win.... 4 mph is the max, that's all it is !!!!! This is a game of DISTANCE , you pull under 4 mph and go the farthest and you da winna ! I pulled Allis's a WD45 and a D17 and routinely won against more powerful Ollies and MM's. I knew where my tractors "sweet spot" was and concentrated on that . Yea, sometimes youd have to wonder if my tractor was moving lol, but I could go the distance.

One particular pull, where some guys that got to a lot of pulls and do very well, come a long distance to hook. They have very high powered tractors. The track is very soft. They often go home empty handed. How can that be VicS, LCB, and twenty mule team? if more is always better. Surely since they are pretty much always in the money at many other pulls, they must know how to work a throttle.

Why don't you come to Tunica. The track there is loose and soft. They have a speedo board at end of track. See how well you can do going even just 3 mph in the 4 mph class. I'm betting the winners board will read 4mpg.

You are right, But i'll bet after a class
or two they will have the track figured
out. I'm working on a 600plus cu. D17
LOL. MUST be crazy!

Throughout the pulling season, there are some statements I have never heard.
Wish i didn't have so much horsepower.
I'm going to pull extra slow this time.
Think I'll put on some skinny tires.
I'm going to let my hitch down a couple of inches.
Just going to run road worns in the cut tire class.
Running a couple hundred lbs light today.

I'm thinking you have never pulled a loose track.
Though I have never heard most of what you mentioned, I have seen skinny tires win very frequently on loose tracks.
On hard pack tracks, wide tires are king. But on soft/loose pack tracks skinny tires win 9 out of 10 times.

Loose track vs hard track pulling is two different animals.

We are speed limited pulling the 7500lb class with 70 JD once traction starts to fall off start pulling back on the throttle most times end the pulls with frontend in the air idling along but it always keeps in the top of the field.

PretendFarmer, Are you an expert tractor puller? I bet you think a pulling tractor is slapping some wheelie bars and an overbore kit in your farm tractor and you have a big bad pulling tractor.

Jimmy2 liter, Congratulations!! your post has revealed that you are lacking in basic knowledge of track reading! If you search the archives you may find where a former frequent poster here back a few years ago offered a tractor pulling instructional manual for those starting out.

(quoted from post at 11:20:16 12/11/17) Yea, you got me all figured out. Bonehead.

PF, I was thinking about this post later on, and I decided that he is really just a twelve year old troll trying to get somebody going. He did so now he can have his laugh.

Yea probably. I'm not losing sleep over it.
But I guess the best response to his statement is: yes, I do think that's a pulling tractor. I wouldn't say big and bad though, just a puller in "stock" classes.
Someone like myself that's raising a family cant be dumping $20k into tractors to get a $2 trophy...

So much butt hurt between you and showcrop. Who said I have a 20K tractor and don't have a family? Maybe I have 2 20k tractors and a family.

Spoken like a true Facebook troll.

I'm no pulling expert and do a little amateur pulling with my Dad's old tractor. Even though I'm a senior citizen, I know I can still learn something, and I enjoy reading posts from those more experienced in the sport than myself. Posts like yours are just sad. I hope you got your jollies.

You do sound like a 12 year old kid BTW. Perhaps you will grow up someday.

Is your tractor worth more than your doublewide?
