2 new pullers

This is my first post. I have 2 tractors I'm working on to be ready for the pulls in the spring time here in colorado. These are my first tractors I've ever bought. 1951 JD "M" and my 1950 JD "AN" should be a good start to my collection. Mechanical work is done on both tractors already, with everything either replaced or rebuilt on both tractors. Its down to a couple of old gaskets and a lot of cleaning and painting. These are also going to be work tractors not just pullers. They have to pay for themselves some how.
Any help or ideas or suggestions would be appreciated.I am learning how to do this as I go and anything to save time and headaches would be great when it come to getting these things ready to go. Thanks

Good for you. Your A should be a decent puller. It should have a slow 1st gear. But would be better with steel wheels. Instead of cast. Here in the midwest there isn't a low enough weight class for a M. Maybe there is one where you are. It would benefit from larger tires also. I pull a 435 JD. 3500 lb. To 4500 lb. It came from a M-MT. National rules lets me have 15.5 X 38. You can google john deere 435 @ Tunica.

I will look that up!
I pulled the M at the last pull of the season here. I competed in class 2 and they have classes from 1 all the way to class 7. Class 1 was farmall cubs and allis chalmers b's. Over the two days I had the 2nd highest pull average in my weight class.
Ran out of traction before I ever ran out of engine. Finished my last pull at slightly over an idle just to maintain traction. Gonna put more weights on it and compete in higher classes with it. Hope to have my A ready for first pull in April.

That's good. Keep on having fun! As you go along you'll start to see improvements to do to them. If rules allow start with a D ring bolted to your drawbar.

What type of pulling are you doing? Stone boat or transfer sled? The JD's will excel on stone boat pulling especially if its a long chain. You will struggle to keep the front end down if the chain is short like 3' or less.
On a transfer sled you will do ok in classes that have speed limits of 3mph or less and enforce it.
You'll have a lot more fun on long chain stone boat.

It's a transfer weight sled and they strictly enforce the 3 mph
rule. I was able to go to the last pull of the year with my M.
Took second in my weight class over the two day average. Ran out
of traction before I ever ran out of power. Finished the pull at
slightly over an idle just to keep from spinning out the tires.
Little tractor has more heart than a$$.
