Vic... you stated in previous post that you
have spent a lot of time figuring out stock
parts that fit into tractor engines to
increase power. I'm wondering if you came
up with anything for a H farmall? I have
one I'd like to 3mph stock pull and
deadweight pull. Would love to hear any
tips to wake it up a bit without stroking.

Sorry don't know much about H's. But high compression will wake any engine up. Also new cam profiles are better. A good valve job, is critical. Port match your carb and manifold. Wish i could help more.
 
Start with increasing compression. A good welder can weld domes or caps to your piston. We are working on an 1800 rpm tractor, not a 10,000 rpm NASCAR engine. You may even find some other or automotive pistons that will work. You can have the head shaved but not enough for significant difference. An l.p. head would be good. Degree in the camshaft. Stock value timing worked great on a 1300 rpm engine with 90# compression. Not real efficient on one going 200# and closer to 2000 rpm. Make sure your governor opens the throttle fully. Be sure it doesn't go over center and start closing the plate. Smooth and polish the inside of the intake manifold. Be sure holes line up and don't overlap. Finally, when you get done, put it on a dyno and tune it out. Don't guess. What I have described are low budget improvements. Some may involve a few dollars but not like stroking, bored and sleeved, billit rods, custom pistons, etc.... good luck.
 
First H puller was a '39 with M&W S&P set for a 350. Used 350 dist head and made 50 hp at 10% over stock RPM. That included opening up the venturi and jets in the carb, rebuilding the distributor to ensure proper function.

When I built the second H, I talked to some speed shops that built dirt cars and drag racers. Told them what I was trying to do and got some good help. I had the block decked to -.005 and used a home made copper gasket to get to a .035 quench. My engine was 3.75 x 5.75 with flat top pistons. Used a 350 gas head that a speed shop installed automotive valves, slightly larger than stock and a 3 angle valve job. I made a set of higher lift rocker arms by cutting 1/2 way through the bottom of the short side, near the threaded hole, pinched shut the gap and welded it. I had to clearance the top of the push-rod slightly to avoid binding. Used a venturi with an accelerator in the middle, I think it was stock on a 706 gas. Fine tuned everything on a dyno and got 70 hp at 10% over. Don't overlook anything that robs power or traction. Check your drive line bearings, make sure you don't have brakes dragging, make sure your hitch is at the specs your allowed and is absolutely rigid under load.
