My Ferris with 18 HP Kawasaki has to crank for a long time as in 45-60 seconds to start when cold. Has plenty of power so I tend to think fuel pump is OK. Choke is closing all the way. Any ideas?

Sounds like fuel is draining from the carburetor during shutdown.

Likely cause is a failing fuel pump (internal check valves leaking). If the mower has a manual fuel shutoff, keep it closed when the mower parked and see if this helps.

I 2nd check valve. If you don't have fuel cutoff put one on. It should be cheep and easy.

You did not say how old it is and if it always has acted this way. The reason for the need to know is that the newer engine have a fuel solenoid that shuts off and then a time delay on the ignition to make them run the carb. low on fuel. It is supposed to keep them from back firing. It makes them start harder.

It is about 6-7 years old and it has done it pretty much as long as I have had it which is about two years. I hadn't thought about check valve in the pump so I will get a pump for it. Thanks, guys.

I have the same model in a Simplicity, they are both made by Briggs & Stratton. My acts similar if you keep cranking, but if you turn it over 2 or 3 times, stop then hit it again, it starts right up.

Check the low oil shut down switch.Engine needs to have oil pressure before starting. To check remove wire from switch if engine fires up quicker the problem could be oil filter allowing oil to drain back to sump. No check valve or a bad one in oil filter. That means when you are cranking the engine its filling the filter & system with oil, once oil is under pressure you get spark and engine starts.
