HVAC Installation

I'm going to be helping a neighbor install a replacement Goodman 3 ton heat pump system this Saturday.

The evaporator coil is aluminum. It has a copper spin closed cap brazed/soldered/? to the stub where the refrigerant return line will attach.

I've never tried to braze to something like this. The instructions said to use a tube cutter and cut the end off the cap, then connect the copper line to the remaining wall of the cut off cap.

My question is can this type fitting withstand the high temperature required for brazing?

I have some bronze brazing rod I've used for joining copper to copper with good success. Is this the proper rod to use? Would soldering be a better choice this near aluminum? Any better choices?

The stub is really short too, going to be a real challenge to get in there to braze or solder it!

Why would you not use a silver solder made for this? It will NOT solder with a propane only bottle.. It will take more heat and require an oxygen/xxxxxx setup to get it red, then it will take the silversolder...

I' dont know if brazing is the same as I thougt it was a brass rod...

Dunno about any new stuff you may encounter, but "SilPhos" has been the standard brazing alloy to use for refrigeration applications since Fido was a pup!

I use silver bearing solder for that type of joint. Uses less nitrogen to protect the joint. Joint will be stronger than the parent metal. Keep a wet rag handy to cool the joint
