Just got about .25 inch rain here in S central IL the last 30 min. Everything was really showing the stress of the heat and no rain. Now on to my question. My brother has an 60's American 599 or 599c air operated dragline. The drag and hoist brakes are killing his legs. We are kicking around the idea of using truck parking brakes to operate the brakes. Does this sound feasible, practical or do you think this is a pipe dream. I think he only has a few more years work for it. Finding a operator for it isn't going to happen. Any ideas? Thanks.

We aint seen a drop north of St louis. Your gonna spend a lot of money and time TRYING to make that work. Older rigs had hand brakes but that was a long time ago. I worked with a several operators from down there. Looks like there in coal country you could find somebody to run it.

I don't see why you couldn't do it. The machine already has an air system, so why not use an air cylinder, with a proportional actuator, to work the brakes. In fact, some of the larger machines, like the 190D Northwests, etc, already do that if I'm not mistaken.

Maybe use something like a Bendix E10 brake valve, and the BVA85 actuator/pedal. Just like the brakes on a truck those on a crane are pressure set, and spring release, so it shouldn't be all that hard to do.

Given that it doesn't take much movement to close the brake band, you might even be able to use a regular type 30 pancake chamber also. Heck, use a spring brake chamber, and you've got the spring set park/lock available too -vs- the mechanical locks used with the manual brakes.

The biggest issue is where to mount the air chambers to operate the brake bands. Get that part worked out, and you'll be golden.

If you run into any problems give me a shout and I'll do what I can to help out.
