Lap-Top Computer Problem-A Tool

Have a Toshiba Lap-Top. Five years old. Has worked properly all the time, until last week. We were going out of town for a few days and I turned the computer off and unplugged the AC adaptor.

Came home, plugged it in and no lights came on. I tested the converter and get 19.75 volts. Bought a new battery, thought that might be the problem, but nothing works.

Any ideas? We have a repair shop in town, but I am looking for some ideas that I can try.

Thanks to all!

If the charging light (not the power light) does not come on, it could be the power port socket. They often fail from age and use. Jim

Only thing I'd be able to do is to carefully remove the cover, plug in the adapter, then just follow the path of power until there isn't any, using my multimeter.

Have you checked the voltage of the battery? If the voltage is good (charged), then there might be a problem with your Power switch.

I tend to think it is not the charger, as you said you bought a new battery, and there "should" have been enough juice in the battery to power the unit on. So if the new battery did not help, seems the problem would likely be internal.

"If" you remove the cover, first thing to do would be to look for ANY dust/debris - anything that should not be in there. It's possible that something may have found its way inside and is shorting across somewhere. However, I would not think this very likely....but it's the first thing to do before actually touching.

Next, has there EVER been an instance (that you know of) where any liquid has ever spilled onto the unit? If so, moisture can cause problems on the inside - often times problems that are invisible to the eye.

Sorry, that's all I have. Wish I could be more help.

As mentioned below, that port we stick the power plug in on the computer gets tugged and pushed and flexed. Over the years it is not unusual for it to crack loose from the motherboard and not connect inside any more.

Would be a first guess.

Laptops are hard to work on and mostly have specialized parts inside, so they can get spendy to work on, even a 'simple' thing like this.....

More than once I have used a toothpick to remove a ball of lint from the power socket so the adaptor plug could go all the way into where it needs to be to make a proper connection.

Slowly and gently move the plug around. If it starts charging in any position then the barrel jack is broke. You can usually find them online for less than $20. Look for walkthroughs for your laptop model. You may even get lucky and have one where the barrel jack has wires that plug into the motherboard. I've replaced 3 so far.
