Electric Motor Question

I may be in the wrong place, but I bet one of the knowledgeable folks on here may be able to help me out. I work at a winey and we use an old milk chiller tank to chill down our wine to drop the tartrates out prior to bottling. It has an electric motor on it that runs a paddle to stir the liquid in the tank. The motor has a slow leak and I need to fix it and refill it. Problem is, I can't find any data on it. It is a Gear Master motor made in Dayton OH. That company has changed hands and been absorbed a number of times. I need a best guess on what fluid goes in the gear box. It is pretty thick stuff.

If it's a worm gear reducer, go with a 75w-140 gear oil. I prefer synthetic, seems to make the seals last longer.

If planetary gears, a lighter oil will work, 15w-40 motor oil will work, again, synthetic.

If you need seals or bearings, very likely they can be matched up at a bearing supply.

You're right on the food grade, didn't think about that, if it is where it can drip in the product.

We also would put drip pans under them.

No worries on the oil mixing in with the wine. The big guy turned water into wine, but we do not want to try and one up him by turning oil into wine. ;-) The whole top of the chiller is covered by a stainless steel lid and the motor part that leaks is off-set from where the mixing paddle goes into the tank. It leaks onto to the lid and never threatens our precious concoctions. Thanks for all of the feedback!

(quoted from post at 17:09:00 09/20/17) Not the motor but the reducer has the leak, can't take it off and put new seals in it?
Good thought, they are probably standard seals just because it's cheaper that way.

a little off topic, but why do they want to lower the tartaric acid level, is it excessive. I thought seeing some tartrates were a sign of good quality?

Pretty much an industry standard to cool the wine down to near freezing to drop out the tartrates. If you don't they will precipitate out later in the bottle (especially with chilled wines) and then you end up with little gritty chunks of them in the bottom of the bottle.
