Over heated my Ford Ranger 2.9 v6. Have water in oil. Pulled the heads and did not find anything wrong with gaskets and no water tail leading in to oil. Have not checked flatness yet. Does anyone know how flat they need to be.

Not sure what the tolerance is, but I would not consider putting them back on without having them checked for cracks.

Always a good idea to have heads surfaced after being overheated.

I believe those use one time use head bolts.
Some History

I guess there are a few of those left on the road, anyway they were notorious for cracked heads. If you think the heads are possibly good I would worry more about checking for cracks.

Sorry for the duplicate, I was literally sitting here looking at my screen flash and refresh and it won't let me edit.

A functional 2.9, wow! When I started wrenching, if it weren't for those, Chrysler K cars, and Tempos, we wouldn't have had any work.

Those heads will cracked under the rocker shafts. They didn'teven need to get hot to do it. Definitely have them magnafluxes before putting it together. FYI, those also have a specific head torque sequence that requires torquing the intake and the heads at the same time.

Look for heads from a 1989 - 1992 Ford Ranger 2.9L. You can see in the picture the 89 -92 head is much thicker in the area where the rocker arm shaft bolts to, that is where the tend to crack. The pre 1989 heads were way too thin in that area as you can see.
