Tool Of The DAy Explained!

Hello,

I made the tool to hold down injectors to troubleshoot a misfire. Used on a
Detroit Diesel two cycle engine. Used to use a screwdriver, that was a balancing
act with a running engine. That was before Infrared temp gauge . The tool slid
down on top of the injector rocker and under the rocket pin, it made it a snap to
hold the injector down,
Guido.

I haven't had my fingers on a two cycle Detroit since I put a 6-71 back together in late '03, early '04 for a friend of mine. He'd torn it down after it got water on top of a piston and bent a rod. I fired it up with no exhaust manifold and just vice grips on the rack, no linkage hooked up from the governor!! Talk about sweet sounding!!

Hello Phil9N3667,

It has been a bit longer for me....1999. I had my class built an 8V92 that was donated to the school I was teaching 425 HP. Many students got hands on running the rack and run it on a stand. Straight pipes, kind of loud but fun to make noise inside the school building,

Guido.

Worked on a 8V92 in '89/90, had the manifolds and valve covers off, trying to find a miss. Talk about a good sounding, barking motor!!

Hello Phil,

My tool would have come in handy for you. I had the students rebuilt the injectors and flow test them, before and after. You should have seen the smile on their faces, when the injector tested up to specs,

Guido.

somewhere i have a set of sleeve pullers for detroits. the spring loaded bar that sits on top of the piston..and fits in the air ports. hmmmmmm gotta think where them went?????

Hello glennster,

What for? Like me you may not see a DD for many moons to come,

Guido.

Back in college we(ag tech) shared a shop with the diesel techs and someone messed up the rack and when that driptroit started she was going full fuel. Someone put a book on the intake and it sucked it! One ol who just got back from desert storm grabbed a fire hose and put it out, said he fought oil well fires. My azz hide behind a combine! Lol as for the motor it dropped a valve and fell in the scavage holes in the cylinder and removed the head.

Hello 4520bw,

I had one run away at first start up after overhaul. I kicked the fuel filter off, whitin seconds, and it stopped. Factory guy came in. Could not see anything wrong. Ran the rack and all was well, 92 series engine have no emergency shut off flapper like the old 71 series. From that day I made an intake blocker, I still have it in my tool box lid. Never needed it since that day......
Guido.
