final smoke out of a chain saw

Helping one of my brothers clean out some trees today. taking off a willow oh 2 1/2 -3 feet diameter. it twisted wrong and dropped right square on the engine, bar and chain fine. I saw from a safe area, a quick wisp of smoke just after the tree hit, yeah that ones a goner. Busted off at minimum both handles, chain break, and air filter housing(I didn't look at it closer then that). It was only a small cheap Poulan so no big loss. We finished the day with the other saw we had there.

Yes, thankfully, he got away unscaved because of the number one rule of felling trees, Pay attention and have an exit.

He had just put a new carb in it. Guess that's not as bad as my other brother who dropped a tree on the saw the first time out with it

Any of ya'll let the final smoke out of a saw.

I have let plenty of smoke out of wiring and electronic devices but not a chainsaw. If someone could invent smoke in a can to go back into this stuff, they would be very wealthy.

Kind of. The last time I used my Husqvarna chain saw it quit about 2 cuts from being done. So I said must have run out of gas. Since I didn?t have much to cut, I didn?t bring a gas can with me. So I thought good enough, cleaned the saw and put it away. Months later I couldn?t start it. Turns out I didn?t run out of gas but rather lost the magneto. Meanwhile the local Husqvarna dealer is no more so I had it order parts online. But with cold weather was moving in so I decided to get a cheap chain saw. Bought a 17? or so electric chain saw. Hooked to my 25kw generator, sawed a dozen 2? to 6? logs and I saw SMOKE from the motor and it quit. Took it back the next day. Husqvarna is up and running. Happy days.

Sometimes those trees will do crazy things. Did you make a hinge cut? That will keep the trunk from jumping back at you most of the time.

yes the tree was hinge notched and using wedges on back side. Thing is the tree was half rotten at the base(nothing to hinge on) and had a heavy limb broken off on the back side that was kind of pushing on it(more then we thought). it Started going the right way then it pinched the blade and actually settled a little (that's when my brother took off), then started going the wrong way and kept going.

I used to cut firewood to make extra money to support my family. I managed to never totally trash a chainsaw...but I ruined a bar or three.

I never went to the woods with less than two good chainsaws

Speaking of Poulan, I found an old well used poulan laying in the middle of the road, it had fallen out of a vehicle. I stopped , picked it up and set it on a nearby fence post. This happened to be by a cemetery. Two weeks later it was still there so I picked it up and took it home. The damage from bouncing down the road wasn’t too bad and soon I had it running. When I tried to cut wood with it the clutch slipped right away. Now I wonder if it really did ‘accidentally’ fall out of a vehicle. I suppose I could throw a new clutch in it but I really don’t need it.

Thank the Lord that the only thing that got hurt was the saw!
It was smart to already have planned an escape.

Years ago felling an 80' Tamarack snag for firewood (great firewood by the way) and a 'widowmaker' snapped of about 20' from the top and stepped off and fell straight down - my pal saw it - yelled, and I ran like a scalded cat. Anyhoo, it hit the saw (a big old McCullogh) that I had abandoned and drove it about 3' into the ground - nothing salvageable - bar was bent at 90 degrees. Ahh the good old days !

Cut a lot of trees with my dad. Only ever saw him drop one where he didn't want it. Wasn't pretty. Landed on the tractor. Only time I ever heard him swear.

This ought to do it
