Wood splitter

Some of you may remember my post asking about the Craftsman 27 ton splitter. I've splitter about four face cord with it and so far I'm quite satisfied. Only thing is I think I'm going to build some sort of platform to hold the split pieces. It's not ideal to have to bend over and pick them up.

Went down that road many many years back. and have built and modified side trays over the years. I am not sure weather you have a splitter with a foot on the end of the I beam or a wedge. I would never have a splitter without the wedge on the end so the foot pushes the block thru it. Pitching wood off the side of the splitter rather than letting it flow off the end really sucks. My splitter with wedge on end just pushes split wood off the end trays into my elevator, and up into my wood haulers.

I got one off Ebay like this one from a guy in i think he was in Montana. Once you mount the brackets you can take off in a few seconds.

You have a vertical beam splitter, why not just sit on a block of wood and split away.
I have a large working table and blocks rotate easily .

No Loren. The wedge is on the ram. Now that I've run this one I can see how that could be handier. However if the foot wasnt on the end you couldn't use it horizontal. Of course an American splitter came up on CL a week after I bought this for less money but it looked like you'd have to spend all your time hunched over running it. It's so low to the ground.

Yep I split a lot of big pieces and having the wedge on the back would be a real pain and wouldn't be able to set the splitter up vertical to split the pieces I can't lift.

I set up a block the right height and sit down. I pile a bunch of blocks in a circle around me then just split away the splitter pushes the the wood into a pile in front of it and when the pile gets to big to push the splitter moves back a little, I then move my seat back. As I split em up I toss more blocks where I can reach em. I usually split about a Cord before I load up a trailer and haul them to the shed. But Loren has us all beat, he is the King as Larry say's LOL.

That sounds like what mine originally was built like. As I said it has gone through some major modifications to get it the way that I want it,

Brendon, you should be able to bolt some sort of "catcher" to the beam. Just make sure it doesn't block access to the engine or fuel tank.
