You can still get a kit on Amazon for $7.00.

When I was a kid, I always liked it when dad would get out the patches you would clamp to the tube and then you would light the diamond-shaped patch with a match (or a torch).
It had a steel shell to it that the clamp would sit on and then the steel shell would be thrown away after the patch would burn off.
I remember the shop would have the smoke lingering in it for quite a few minutes and the smell would be in the shop all day.

Gambles, I've put many of those on!

Last one I did must have been 20 years ago. Had everyone in the shop looking for what was burning! LOL

I don't think they can be bought anymore.
Hot Patches

Bought a kit last summer to patch a garden tractor tube, couldn't find my old one. Before I could open the new one I remembered where the old one was.

Yup, from bicycles to big truck and tractor tires. I like the vulcanizing patches best though.

I still have some hot patches at the shop. I'd be afraid to try to use them they are so old but they sure do make good conversation pieces for those that have never seen them. Keith

i remember those also, if and a big if it was, if i had a dime i would walk, carrying the rim and tire, the mile to the local service station and have one put on. like others as a young boy i was amazed at the sizzle, smoke and smell.

Yup, bought a similar set a year or two back. Had a shorter can, but still round. Made 100% in China. Spent over a day messing with the tire (riding mower) and neither the glue nor the patch held. Went back to plugs!

HOWEVER....the first plugs I got weren't the sticky plugs like I'm used to. They failed after about 15 minutes of use. So about 4 days into this mess, I finally just drove a screw into the hole to hold air until UPS could bring some sticky plugs, ordered from Amazon. That worked!

It's amazing how much trouble a small piece of thin wire can make. *lol*
