Free Chainsaw

Hello,

Brother in law gave up on it. I put in a carb kit, cleaned the carb, and got it running good. It is a 46CC 18" chainsaw. Now I need to sharpen the chain and see what she will do,

I've had good luck with the HF electric chain saw sharpener. Tried hand filing, file guides and rotary stones in the past but none worked as well. Some times easier to buy a new carb rather than rebuild. Got one for my old Craftsman for $9. Runs like new.

Recently, I overheard an acquaintance telling the counter person at my local tractor, implement, power equipment, etc., dealer that he liked Homelite saws but could no longer buy them.

As I slightly knew the guy, I mentioned that I had several old Homelite saws that had not been used in years but were in good condition (all but one which had lots of hours but still worked) when I made the changeover to Stihl years ago. His eyes lit up so I described all, being careful to say that none had been used in years and all would require work to be useable.

Long story short, I sold a blue XL-12 and 3 red XL-2s, one nearly 20 years old but never used. All had new or nearly new bars, chains and sprockets. Included were 4 new chains and one new bar for the XL-2 saws (all still in the packages), a new bar and new chain for the XL-12 (still in the packages), and a box of misc. parts including sprockets, spark plugs, etc. Also included was a six pack of Homelite 16:1 oil in the cardboard cans for the XL-12. Sold everything for $150 and he couldn't get to my place fast enough to pick everything up.

The next day he called, informing me that none of the saws ran and he wanted his money back.

No good deed goes unpunished.

Hello Dean,

I would ask him if he has a sales receipt a d warranty card! The are the most finicky? Spelling saws I have work on. Once they are right, they are as good as any other saw. With the read valve timing it's hard on the same or arms, that is why most people don't like them. I have a 40yesr old Sears which is an Homelite, still running,

Guido.

Hello jethrow4,

I use diamond burs on a high speed sharpener,20.000R.P.M.'s.
Also use a full chisel chains on all my saws, not for the occasional user though,

Guido.

Hello Dan,
I know that they made them for Sears, possibly for them too. They have lots of compression and hard on weak harms,

Guido.

Deere owned Homelite for a while in the 90's, so it's quite possible it was indeed just a rebadged Homelite.

First off I think you sold everything for way too cheep. What part of old, used, hasn't run for several years, buy at your own risk does this bozo not understand.? Heck to me that is a challenge to get everything running again. I will be posting a story about a lawn tractor I purchased this weekend in a few days.

I too thought that I was giving my Homelite stuff away but I knew that I would never again use any of it and thought myself fortunate that I stumbled across someone who might benefit from everything.

Frankly, I just wanted it all gone. I made the change to Stihl about 20 years ago and will never go back.

Today, I found another new, unused chain still in the package for the 20" XL-12 saw that I had set out for the buyer but forgot to give to him. I've his phone number but am hesitant to call him and tell him. Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm.

I also have a "fleet" of Homelite saws I am going to sell. A Zip, 2 blue XL-12's, 1 360, and three 35's which I believe are a Canadian version of the 360. All ran, some recently, some not for a while. And a few chains, filters, etc. Kids got me a Stihl a few years ago, and I just got my Dad's Husqvarna. All the kids are married and gone, and I sure don't need that many chainsaws!
