Carbon brushes for Craftsman belt sander

I have a Craftsman 4"X24" belt sander that I've owned for more than 40 years. When a bearing went bad about 35 years ago I learned that Sears had already stopped supporting that model. I was able to get the part I needed from a bearing company and kept it going until last year. I thought I'd burned it up then, but for some reason I didn't look at the brushes at that time. Today, prior to junking it, I realized that I hadn't checked the brushes, and did so. From the look of them, it's possible that that's the problem. Well, actually that would be problem one. Problem two would be finding replacement brushes. Can anyone direct me to a seller of brushes for orphaned tools, or a source of generic brushes that I might be able to order by size. Or suggest some other way to do it. eBay was no help.

Thanks, Stan

Google electric motor brushes you can find them all over ebay or many other places. They can be filed to fit if needed.

In the past I have had a few successes by just carefully filing ones that are close enough down to a neat fit .
There really isn't a vast array of sizes in brush cross section , it seems to me that the length and type of electrical connections are what differ most . Measure what you have and try a few suppliers if they still exist in your town .
I used a flat file and emery paper to make new brushes for a Stanley belt sander that must have been built in 1960 , still runs very well today .

First stop for me on these projects is Old Wood Working Machinery (OWWM) which now covers metalworking and other machinery as well. They've got an extensive collection of Sears info, as of course Sears farms most of the actual manufacturing out to other companies, and if you can determine who made it, it's often easier to approach finding parts that way, rather than relying on Sears, whose parts support has always been highly variable and nowadays is even less so with their other difficulties. If the link below doestn't take you directly to the Craftsman section, poke around and you'll find it easily.

I have this small router that a friend and I use in a wood duplicator machine. It is way overused for what it was designed for and uses brushes up on a regular basis. I measured the size and went on Ebay and found just about any size you want in 10 packs from China dirt cheap.

I don't know for sure but it says for Craftsman Sander. I thought maybe some of the part numbers could be checked. What is the Craftsman model number on your sander?

tech4; It's Craftsman 4" belt sander model No, 315.11780. I already Googled that description and model number and came up with the same picture you sent. I may buy that set anyway. If it's too big I can make it smaller. If it's too small or doesn't fit in some other way, it isn't much money. Thanks.
