Overrunning clutch

I found an overrunning clutch out at the farm and it goes on my 540 pto shaft but how do you make it stay on the pto shaft. Doesn't look like there are any holes for pin just two grease zerks. I looked at TSC online and theirs looks the same with nothing holding it on. I slipped mine on and after a few minuts running it fell off.

Must be something missing on it. The ones I have came with the locking, spring loaded collar that you slide back. It locks onto the shaft into that notch the shaft has on it. The other one has that little spring loaded pin you push down to lock it into that notch.

If you take the grease fittings out of it you will see ahole through it . you line the hole on clutch with hole on pto shaft then drive a spring pin in the hole and put the grease fittings back and than grease it.

ok,on those, take out the grease zerks, inside there will be a hole in the center section, the one that goes on the pto shaft, it will line up only 1 way with the holes in the outer housing where the grease zerks go, there should be or should have been a roll pin with the orc, when lined up the pin goes thru the inner housing[ the one that splined to the pto shaft] as well through the pto shaft, after you install it, make sure the outer shaft rotates freely in one direction, it will sound like a socket ratchet, the replace the zerks and grease it, also grease it before each use

Sounds similar to mine. Unscrew the grease zirks & mount it on the pto shaft using a roll pin through the zirc holes, or as I've done, use a long (hardened steel) bolt that goes all the way through and secure with the nut. Easier to remove when finished with it. Make sure you grease it beforehand. Hope this helps. Chris

You need to take out the grease zerks then you line the holes up on the overrunning clutch with the hole on the PTO shaft then you need to pound a roll pin in the hole the roll pin can"t be too long the outer portion of the overrunning clutch has to be able to spin separately from the inner portion then reinstall the zerks and grease

Thanks for all of the comments. I will have to look at taking the zerks out and get a roll pin. Hopefully it works. I have a loader with a pto pump and an extention pto out the back of the pump so I will see where the hole is on the extention.

Are you able to spin the clutch and the pto shaft stands still with the long bolt? I don't think so. Better check. Maybe you have a design not available in the states.

Yes, long before the push-button retainer, we had to use a 1/4" Bolt (Double-Nutted) to hold the PTO yoke on...
Never trusted that spring retainer..I still like to use the thru-bolt along with the retainer..

Ron..

Some of the newer clutches have set screws under the grease Zerk"s rather than a roll pin. Most newer tractors do not have a hole in the PTO shaft.
