Would a capacitor from a 3 hp motor[ 1ph] operate satisfactorily in a 2 hp motor.?

Start cap or run cap?

How close are the voltage ratings and mfd ratings of the caps, voltage being the most important if you don't want smoke and noise.

See if you can find numbers on the caps, followed by "MFD". That's the capacitance, which needs to be close to the same. By "close", I mean the replacement should within 50 percent of the original value.

Voltage rating is vital.
You really can't oversize the start amd run capacitors. They arem usually limited by price and avaliable room to mount them.
Going even double the microfarads on the start and run capacitors. Will result in the better starting and higher power factor motor.
