M mounted cultivator

There is a guy where I work who says he has a 4 row mounted cultivator that he used to put on his 400. I am assuming this will fit on my M Farmall. I told him I would give him $100.00 for it. He said he thought that was all it was worth. If it will fit, I want to get it loaded and in my yard before he changes his mind.

It will not fit(bolt right on).M and 450 front frame/bolsters are different. You will have to do some drill ing/fabricating in order to make it work.A 450 is drilled/tapped to accept an M cultivator, but not viceversa.I know this because last winter put a 450 cultivator on an M.It was a LOT of work!(just ask my wife!)

I plowed many an acres of corn and soybeans with one. Ours also had the rear attachment to plow out the wheel tracks.

We also had one that mounted on our 706. We would put a narrow front end under it for the summer of cultivating and baling hay.

My dad said that with the narrow front end under it it was just a "big M"

As DeltaRed indicates, you're gonna have a problem. That said, there are at least two or three versions of those IH 4-row cultivators, so your problems may vary from small to significant.
The front bolster of the 400 (and late SM models) is less rounded on the front corners than that of the M, and have a vertical hole in the front corners. The right and left gangs of the cultivators probably hinge on a pin that drops into those holes. To fit on the M, a bracket is required. It is a cast bracket, and bolts to the frame rails and front bolster. It has a vertical pin in the front of it that hinges the cultivator units and also has a big eyebolt that locks them in place. I'm pretty sure those brackets can even be reversed to hang 4- row units on the front of an H. If you can find a set of those brackets, you'll likely be in business! If someone can provide a picture, you can probably weld up something that will work. You'll probably also need the bracket that bolts through the two holes in the upper part of the grill and into the top portion of the front bolster of the M. Sometime in the Super M series, the upper portion of the bolster changed and the cultivators bolted through two larger holes in the grill.

I rebuilt the set of cultivators my dad had on his 450.
Works OK.
