tire size change

I have a farmall 450 with badly miss matched and very poor 15.5x38 tires. I have a nice set of 13.6x38's. how much differnce will it make going to 13,6's? I only use the tractor for small jobs with the bucket adroud the place. and one tractor pull at the fair. were i always take 1st in my class.

thanks Howard

If the tractor is winning with the poor tires, I would leave them on. Or if the looks of the tires is getting on your sense of beauty (or someone else's) why not do one of three things. Put the new tires on a set of rims/wheels, and change them out when racing.
Put the new tires into a trade for matched 15.5 of better looks, (you can't beat their performance).
Put the new tires on and scrap the 15.5 mismatched tires and possibly lose Pulls.
I like the middle solution. Jim

A 15.5 usually is mounted on a 14" wide rim.
A 13.6 is usually mounted on an 11" wide rim.

If indeed you do have the 14" wide rims, those 13.6 tires aren't going to work out very well.

15.5 is the low profile and slightly wider verison of the 13.6, the height is exactly the same between a 15.5 and 13.6 so look wise/height wise nothing will change. Both pull well its all personal preference.

Howard, the 13.6 tires new stand 61.6 tall, the 15.5s stand 61.8 tall. If you change to 13.6X38 you will need to purchase new tubes. The old ones will be [streched] out to fit the 15.5's and will most likely wrinkle in the 13.6's causing a flat tires.

The 13.6's will be taller due to the fact that the 15.5's were badly worn.

It might be a bit of a challenge to get the 13.6's stretched on to a 14" rim, if that's what the tractor has, but it's possible.

There was an article in Farm Show several years back about a gentleman that was getting tremendous traction benefits from putting tires on "too wide" rims with little to no detrimental effect to the tire.

The reason is you're flattening the tread out and making a wider ground contact patch.
