How's they haying?

So far this year, I've cut hay 3 times in between rain storms, but every time I cut it was facing at least a 50% chance of rain which never happened. I'm sure my luck has about run out, but I might take down 8 acres tonight despite this forecast (if I can mow without making ruts).

Deluge is better than a drought, though.

Been real dry but now that stuff needs cut in hopes of a second cut, it calls for rain everyother day also. Gonna bite it and cut some on monday I think.

You must live near by, same forcast. :)

I cut 1/8 of my hay, the rest is gonna get pretty ripe grass. The stuff I baled was pretty wet, not great hay.

Odd think neighbor has his alfalfa to do yet too, and it is not blooming yet! Was such a cold wet spring, the whole field should be purple by now, and it's not. He bags the alfalfa, so don't need a very big weather window; but wiuth 2 inches of rain, there are puddles in our fields, can't get the heavy modern chopper through the field without destrying it.

Have the baler out of the barn, and did repairs on it yesterday and today. Ran a bunch of loose hay off the barn floor through it - hand forked. Lot like work. Replaced some parts, made some adjustments on knotter that gave me fits last summer, and it baled the last ten or so pretty well. Tied OK. Maybe now I can look for tuning up the mower & rake. My mower/raking tractor is down with a broken crankshaft, so I have a bunch of work before I and use that, but I can use other tractor. Son is tearing into a 1949 Farmall C that he salvaged from grandpa's barn. Been unused for years. Thinks he can get it going, use it for hauling hay wagons. So maybe soon, weather permitting.

Wow, your high temps are cooler than the low temps are here. Just got done with my first cutting..... pitiful isn"t the word for it, around 100 small square on about 23 acres. Didn"t bother to rake some of it because there was nothing there. This is usually about the time we should be getting our second cutting, just haven"t had much rain since October, none for the last 6 weeks. Grasshoppers we have plenty of though! Wish I could think of a use for them other than fishing.... the ponds are drying up. I"m about 50 miles East SE of Dallas.

I'm about 10% done. Baled a little bit of that kinda tough day before yesterday. Had an inch and a half of rain last night. That weighed down hay that was already going down under its own weight. Looks like a chance of rain Saturday through Wednesday coming up again. Oh well,we'll get it eventually. We always do.

We baled a 5.6 acre coastal bermuda field yesterday. This was the first cutting and we only got 66 small square bales. Usually we get around 450. We shot it with 200 lbs/acre of 34-0-0 after baling, so we should have a decent second cutting (if we can get rain). The rest of our fields are dried up almost completely, though. If we could get an inch of rain, we might be able to salvage at least some hay off them, though.

waiting on the weather, plus work fulltime doesn't help. had a 4 day stretch other week, called for afternoon showers, but it never rained. ground was other problem, saturated, down hay would never dry, just get vapor soaked from below.

I finished bailing my first time over yesterday. I have cut 45 acers of Coastal Bermuda and Bahia. Some of it has been cut for 30 days and should be ready for the second cutting but we have not had any rain. It will be at least two weeks before it can be cut again IF we get some rain.

here in south east PA, once the rain quit we had 2 weeks of dry, then hot, weather. Our hay is in and most others too. Got some heavy rain 4-5 days ago so 2nd cutting is coming along. I wish you all well.

Hard finding two good days in a row,4 inches of rain last week,1.5 inches yesterday, cut 8 acres today. Tomorrow will stuff it in bag before it rains friday night. If this keeps up I think I will get pontoons for all my machines and I live on a ridge, bottom guys still trying to get corn in.Scott

Tell me about it. My Dad is normally around to rake for me while I'm at work, but this year he left the country for the the month of June. The old man just gets smarter with age, I tell ya.

With no raker, I have to rake in the evening one day and bale the next evening since I can't get haying weather on the weekends. I made one batch of dry hay, the rest has been balage. If I didn't have the 3pt round bale wrapper, I wouldn't be haying.

Not too far. I'm over in the SE corner of MN near La Crosse.

Did your forecast improve too? Now it looks like some rain tonight and Sat morning, then dry for the rest of the weekend. Every time I cut hay this year the rain chances go down, I must have a lucky rabbit's foot somewhere that I don't know about. Usually quite the opposite happens.
