Hey folks,
Guy was telling me the other day that he was looking at buying an F450 with a diesel motor (don't know which one) that will get 20-25 mpg...
Is someone pulling his leg???

All depends on gearing and how it's used. If it's running 2k or so at highway speeds on the tach no way......if he's running around 1600 shouldn't be bad but I don't think it will be much more than 20. Semi can pul 6-8 running down the highway at 80k lbs.

my f-350 1 ton gets up to 18>20 mpg empty, around 1900>2000 rpm..... loaded 10>12 without head wind/hills, with the foot almost in the fan blades.... if this so called truck gets that good, i'd buy it and get rid of my 1-ton......

Possible with the right gearing, an open exhaust and intake. also
possible with a tuner or a chip. With the right gearing and a manual
transmission, you can get 25mpg highway with a 7.3 powerstroke
(with an open exhaust, intake and the right tuner)

They usually have deep gears in them, they scream on the highway.
I'd say someone is pulling their leg. Should get 14-17 mpg or so if
you don't drive too fast.

Yep, just like the Dodge guys at the diesel pump. Just becuase the little computer screen says 25 mpg when going down Pikes Peak with your foot off the pedal, doesn't mean that's a realistic average. I dont care what you do to any 3/4 ton and above trucks, they average 14-17 mpg, pretty dang good. I have a fleet of 10 F-450's with the 7.3 and we use fuel cards that require odometer input and are truck specific. They never have and never will see 25 mpg.

An early Dodge Cummins 12v driven by somebody with a light foot who can keep it just into the turbo but not going over 60mph can do 22-25 empty but not much better though thats for a 4x4, a 2wd might do 25 reliably driven easy. That'd be a 3/4 ton truck, as the others have said the heavier trucks are almost always geared lower and eat more fuel.

We have a '99 F-450 fire-rescue truck that we received brand new. Always loaded with 300 gallons water, rescue equipment, tools, ect.ect. Runs like a scalded dog. Gets 8 mpg every day 24/7/365. Never has gotten any better fuel mileage.

My '08 F350 4x4 dually will get 20-22 reliably if driven sanely BUT, I removed the DPF and CAT, and use a tuner. I have it set on the lowest horsepower, and I'm told it would get better if turned up more. I still tow with it some, so I'll leave it where it's at. If we could keep the EPA out of our way, we wouldn't need any foreign oil. The technology is there to get great mileage, but when you plug the exhaust, it's tough to get good numbers.

My F350D Crew Cab dually will get 14 MPG by it's self,Hook up to the 11K Jayco 35" 5th wheel RV Trailer and it drops to 8 MPG.7.3 Turbo Power Stroke with Ford 5 speed manual.

Maybe downhill with the wind at his back and with his foot off the gas pedal. I would think that the best an F-450 would get would be 18MPG at best, Diesel maybe. Gas--no way.

I have a neighbor that had the duramax diesel in an Chevy 3/4 ton truck and he says he got 25 MPG on long trips going down to florida. (he could be full of BS)

I've never seen a 450 or anything over a ton truck that would get 25 mpg. I believe the highest gears you can get factory in a 450 is 4:88 possibly a 4:56. Nothing higher though. I've had an 03 Dodge 3/4 ton manual 4wd taht would get 23 empty. My 97 that I have now gets 17-18 under normal driving conditions. If you keep it under 60 mph it will get 20 or a little better. It has 4:10 gears.
