Best brush hog

We love our Woods Brush Bull 720. They make an even heavier model 7200. We would buy another.

The selling points for a rotary mower in my Opinion are deck height, Blade tip speed, and shipping weight. The Woods beat JD and others on all those points.

(quoted from post at 12:24:34 06/30/11) If you were to buy a new heavy duty brush hog what would you buy?
ou said 'heavy duty'....that implies that you plan on cutting something more than grass. In that case, what you do [b:0b109b40b5]not[/b:0b109b40b5] want is a high blade tip speed.

I would go with a Bush Hog again. We got ours about 10 years ago. Very simple consruction so there's not a lot that can break and they're pretty tough. Nice thick steel body

Clipping weeds, cutting light brush or chopping down 4" dia trees? Any rocks in the soil? Any decent dealers in your area? Is "best" the "lowest price", high performance, reliability or value per dollar?

JD Tim,

I have an old Big Bee brand brush hog. It has been a very good machine and I use it under extreme conditions. I bought it used about 15 years ago. It's pretty beat up and I hope to replace it sometime before too long. I'm checking Craigslist regularly for a used one.

Big Bee has three levels of quality. I'm hoping to find one of the mid-quality units.

JD Tim, I have had the use of a Servis/Rhino SR-15m, with the amount of Abuse I have personally dealt this shredder I would buy a new one in a Heart Beat. This is one tough shredder!
There are 3 things that determine a shredders toughness............
1...High HP gearboxes, (200+HP)
2...Heavy deck plating
3...Did I mention..... High HP gearboxes
Yes there are weaknesses in this shredder but is isn't then deck or gearboxes!!! If stored outside in off season slack of the tension on the Slip-clutches, then blade bolts

I bought a new FMC about 35 years ago, and its still going strong. Don't know who owns FMC now, and whether they're still building a quality product.

There's a dealer locally who sells Land Pride, and everyone seems happy with them. I also have a JD 4' for my compact utility tractor, and I'm satisfied with it, as well.

Modern mfg Highway special. Tough as nails.I think you can buy them fully galvanized no painting or rust worry.I know for a fact lighter models are galvanized. The Highway special was not available in galvanize at the time I bought mine

I'll second the motion for the Servis/Rhino. I've seen those mowers with the tail wheels literally falling off due to abuse but the rest of the machine just kept right on going.

Rusty, 6 yrs ago if you had asked me to name the toughest shredder I don't think I would have placed the SR shredders in that group.
I was at a local dealer a month or so ago that is one of the major implement dealers in my area. They knew of a pecan grower that has 6 units in is orchards that do nothing but eat the dead limbs that shake out of Pecan trees on a daily basis. His Spanish hands do not haul out limbs, the shredders eat them and spit them out the back. As I said above decks and gear boxes are not the weak link. For me it is the blade bolts.
When you shier of a blade bolt At full throttle that is when things get right entertaining.
OBTW I told the dealer I would be interested in buying one of this fellows 6 shredders as they come of rotation and are traded in on a new one.
Anyway, take care!

bush hog commercial grade and Rhino are the big honkers... but then i wouldnt pay that much for my use..

After owning a couple, couldn't get me to take a FREE Woods mower. (BB7200 and BB8400 that were a waste of good money)

For the heavy stuff, Bush Hog 406. For medium work, a BH 286 or 296.

I bought an old Bush Hog mower, put some new bearings in, has worked good for years. Much heavier than the TSC mowers.

woods BB840 tough i would buy another in a min. I nave cut 4in. material several times and never no problems. woods is tops in my book

I guess it depends on what your mowing. I have a woods Dixie cutter 5ft and a Howse 6ft. Both have worked great over the years, but I only cut horse pastures, grass, and some brush, like sumac and honeysuckle. I wouldn't say I use them for heavy work, although they probably would do heavy work. There all good if u use them right.

The main ones I would recomend are: Rhino, Bush Hog, Land Pride, and John Deere. Right now I think Land Pride has the best warranty on the gear cases on the market. It is like a five years, I think. Just make sure you are getting the heavy duty units. All of those makers make light duty cutters too.
