Seed Storage ?

After planting my corn(middle of may) i had four bags of seed left over, and just stacked them in the garage. Well today as i was backing my bike out I had a oh crap moment when i saw them. Have i ruined a $1,000 worth of seed, and if i haven't what are the ideal conditions to store it. Thanks in advance for the help.

They say to put it in a cool dry place. I store mine in my basement. Which reminds me I better go out in the tool shed and get that bag of left over corn seed and put it there.

Make sure it is off of a damp concrete floor, that will do the damage the fastest way of all. Get it up so it is dry, if bags are damp empty them (I have used paper grocery bags to store seed in for years) and then figure out a way to keep rodents out of them. We had a tight wooden box that we stored all kind of seeds in, Timothy, red clover and left over corn and once in a while a few soybeans. Main thing is dry and rodents, if neither will cause problems the seed will be good for years.

If you hurry your dealer might take it back. I have stored it in the freezer. Same thing happened to us last year, one bag sort of got misplaced, found it last winter. It just laid in the shop for a year. Bottom line we used it this year, spread it over all the boxes, different number and brand, can't find it, maybe it all grew, maybe none of it grew! Hope this helps LOL Vic

I always just kept mine in the machine shed up off the dirt floor or else in the wooden granary. Wood palates work fine.

I keep some seed corn over most every year. Store it in the shop inside a sealed plastic or steel 55 gallon drum. Also have a small amount of corn insecticide in a bag stored in the drums. No insects , no rodents. Never fails to sprout normally next year.

1) you're paying $250 a bag? Don't remember mine being that high.
2) Dealer will usually take back unopened bags, during planting season.
3) Put them in a sealed container, Air tight.
4) do not carry them over more than one year.

We have always hanged ours from a rafter or truss in the machine shed with a rope so the mice won't get to them. Keeps them nice and dry too.
