Just noticed the seed heads on the timothy hay plants are either black or turning black and the stems are yellow from the top down for a ways

Any one knows what causes that?

I just came in from cutting a timothy alfalfa mix. I noticed that on the timothy too. I believe it is getting ripe. This is the first cutting for mine as it has been raining every other day for the last 6 months here in so. central Mn. I never had timothy get that mature before. I wonder if it is like wheat and ripen from the top down.
