65 mustang coupe continued...

so with the 65 mustang we found, the body is pretty solid but the rocker pannels are rusted out, but they have fitted ones for it. the floor HAS been replaced, the engine turns over and runs, it will need body filler and sanding. The rear quarter pannels have been replaced but were done really good. the original color is black they have many new parts, it needs tranny cooler lines and brake lines. Also if it helps any it is really between a 64 and 65 with the title of a 65 because it doesnt have reverse lights, and it was the 13th made in april i think?. they started at 3500 but dad offered 2500 and they said they will take it, but we havent decided on if we are getting it or not yet...

Make sure to check where the spring shackles attach to the body in the rear. They rust bad and eventually pop right through the trunk floor.

My brother had a 65 mustang and I had a 69 cougar. Real rust buckets but pretty easy to work on. Be prepared to regularly replace the front ball joints Ford pony cars had real issues with them. Same gas tank and filler as the infamous pintos don't get hit from behind.

thats a '64&1/2 first ones out...if you buy it upgrade the brakes to the tandem master cylinder...i think they came out in late 66 or 67...mustang,cougar,comet,fairlane,etc all the same parts.

Uh huh, you didn't listen to me. I said offer 2 and tell them that's all you had. If they accepted 25 hundred, then they just may have accepted the 2. Oh well, too late now.
Be sure and post pics when you get it home, we know your gonna buy it! You know the old saying, a fool and his money are soon parted.
Not saying your foolish. But just saying.....

You made them an offer and they accepted and now you are going to decide if you want it? I'm glad I don't do business with you.

Here's a good source that you'll need. (cjponyparts.com)

Now a day's you can buy pert near every piece of that car new and prices are fairly cheap. The downside is old cars are like tractor's. Fix them up right & you'll have double what they're worth invested. Have fun.

A couple of ways to tell a 64-1/2 from a "65:
Ford used the 260 V-8 in 64-1/2 and the 289 in "65.
The "64-1/2s had a generator, the 65s an alternator.

Remember it has no frame and as others have said they rusted badly, So if the rocker panels and floors went you need to be checking all the unibody channels under it. Be sure that the motor is securely mounted in the car and not on a dolly under it LOL.

he was just throwing a price at them of what he thinks it is worth, but it is my choice if i want to get it or not, i think i will though i just dont want to buy something that is going to come here and we will work hard on it for a while then quit.

I had a 64 1/2 also. It was a 2 door coupe. I saw them unload it along with a hatchback while still under a tarp. I took a look at it through the back window of the dealership before it was shown and said it was mine. Bought it for $2800. I had to let them show it for one week before I could have it. We got married and took our honeymoon trip with it. This car was kept in a garage and detailed often. No rust to my knowledge. This was in the southern California desert and later on the coast, where it never saw salt.

It had a 289 CU with a 4 barrel, automatic trans, AC, center console, white with blue interior. I can't remember if it had an alternator or a generator.

10 years later the upper ball joints needed replacing. I had two kids so I sold it to a neighborhood boy for $700. He drove it a while and wrecked it.

Oh yes, the hatchback had the 260 cubic inch V8 in it.

Hatchback? The only body styles offered in 64.5 were the Coupe and Convertible. The Fastback came out in the changeover to the true 65 model. The 260 was discontinued in the true 65"s. The first Hatchback didn"t come out until the Mustang II.

awhtx, you are correct. I just checked with my wife whom I married April 25th, 1964. Two Mustangs came in on the same truck, both were white coupes, one had blue interior and a 289, the other had red interior and the 260 engine. The dealer said he was forced to take them, and he didn't think he could sell them. We bought the one with blue interior and the 289 and took it on our honeymoon. The fastback come out later. My error, and as is mostly true, my wife is right.
