Steering problems; Have a 1949 jd A, have had sense 1955,is in very good shape except it has become extra hard steering, it has roll-matic, which makes some harder to steer. Can anyone tell me what to try to help? I am older and that does not help. dick [email protected]

Probably the first thing to do is jack up the front end of the tractor and see if there's slack up and down in the vertical spindle...if there is that means the thrust bearing in the lower front of the pedestal is bad. If there's no slack up and down then something's amiss in the steering box...no lube...bad steering shaft bearings, etc. Only visual inspection will tell you. If it used to steer relatively easy but has become hard over time, chances are something's wearing out. Pull the medallion cover and then top cover off the steering box and see what's going on in there.

That thrust bearing can be bad and still not have any up and down play, to check have to prop up frameand take the nut on top of shaft loose and drop shaft to visualy inspect and you will probly find flat rollers or at least stuck rollers.

I have jacked up from fram and have 0ne-half inch up and down play. Have checked gear and bearing on top ,all seem ok, bet you are right ,will have to pry down to check bearing on lower end of main spindle. Thank all of you for the help, will try to resolve this problem. dick
