Generators That Run on Propane?

My propane tank and my elec. service are very close to each other. I was thinking of seting a generator so I could run it on propane insted of gas. We do lose power but not like years ago. It may not need to run for a long time. Not wanting the gas to gum-up. Will propane gum-up if it sets unused? If you have a generator that runs on propane I'd like to hear about it.

You won't have problems with propane gumming up. Check with your propane supplier about conversion kits for your generator. I did mine about 5 years ago and have not had any problems. Got my kit from my propane supplier.

Dad has a generator he converted to propane a couple years ago. I kno he did a lot of research on it and finally boought a kit to convert it over and has been happy so far. It doesnt get used that often but he starts it up for a bit once a month just to run it.

There are quite a number of generators available that run on LPG.

I recently learned that there are also quite a number of generators available that are called tri-fuel generators and can run on LPG, natural gas, or gasoline.

If a portable sized unit would suffice a tri-fueled model might really be handy around a farm to take power where it is temporarily needed.

The generator we have was set up to run on gasoline or propane when we bought it new. It sets in a small shed, the LP line has a shutoff valve just inside the shed. Starting the generator is as simple as turning the valve on, pushing a button that purges air out of the line between the valve and the motor, and give the rope a couple tugs.

No problems in the last 15 years. The 1000 gallon LP tank that it is hooked to lasts quite a long time.

I have one, works great, I run it every couple of months, just to keep the battery charged. Easy to do when you don't have to get gas or yank on a rope.

in the r-v world of Genny's, the have a choice, run on gas, or lpg...most have hooked-up for LPG cause the LPG can sit for years and still be good. the Gasser's they have to connect and disco like a boat gas tank.....how many LPG tractor still around and you hear they still have LPG from years ago and start and run just fine.... can check with hank hill, propane and propane acc. lol

Propane is the perfect fuel for a stand by generator. It dosen't go stale or gum up like gasoline, won't grow bacteria or jell up when cold like diesel, it dosen't get water in it, and it is almost impossible to steal.

Check prices on conversion kits from local
propane supplier, versis, a professional conversion supplier such as "TramwayGuy" lists here. Chances are, the local guy gets the kit
from another source and adds a big markup!

Yesterday I was at my neighbor's place, where he has a propane powered standby generator run by a six cylinder engine that looks to be a Chevy or something in that size range. It wasn't getting up to speed so he called the service tec out. The generator had a 3/4" black pipe gas line running to the engine and it was starving out when they revved it up to 60HZ. The service tec said the 3/4" gas line from the tank to the engine was too small, that it really needs a 1" line. I don't know any particulars as to what kind of a supply valve is on the tank. I do know it runs on vapor only. Just a little info. Good luck with the project. Jim

Propane or NG is the best for standby generators. Engines last longer burn cleaner and no choke to worry about. The only thing I have seen that was a problem with propane. Was a few years back, oil from the tank was clogging up regulators. But that was only a one time deal.

Your local propane dealer should be able to help with a conversion kit.

Onan tech since 1980.

Some LP supplier DO NOT have a clue when it come to Motor Fuel LP. If you ask about a conversion and you get a DUH, find another company to ask the question to. I build my own conversion buying only the demand regulators.
