Modern or classic?

Why do they have to make a barely affordable drill more complicated, more expensive, and less reliable?CIH 5400 No-till drill acre counter. I know 2 other guys besides me spent $360 on the 2-component system. (three if you count the wheel). What was wrong with the old mechanical counter on the 5100? I can understand why we got away from the old cast-iron counter from the 1950s...you could melt that thing down and have enough iron to cast an engine block... but the little bale counter was the ultimate in simplicity and reliability. Are younger farmers actually clamoring for this expensive junk or is it being foisted upon us? Fritz

Do people like all this unnecessary complicated garb? I've found there are generally 3 answers to this. 1)It's nice while it works but it sure is a pain sometimes. 2)NO 3)Yeah, I like it....almost as much as I like $4/gal diesel.

We'll have to strike the word 'service' from your post. I asked CIH dealer for testing procedure of either component...after five people and 45 min. of blank stares...I wonder if this is a new form of parts dept. training. Making you pull your hair out until you buy the part just to get out of the place.

What they are doing is responding to demand from the large farms. Farms where someone has figured out overlap wastes fuel when tilling, fuel and fertilizer while spreading, fuel and seed while seeding....ECT....when yer planting thousands of acres that adds up quick. Plus they are couning on the large farmer to call them for service putting more business is their pocket. As far as long term support.....they don't care. The big guys don't keep stuff very long and in fact most of the big operations in our area lease.....

I've been going through the same thing with my local CIH dealer. Has nothing in stock for my IH haybine or my CASEIH round baler. AGCO dealer has parts for em though! And their prices are way better than CIH! Another plus is that the people at the AGCO parts counter seem to know what they are doing!

Years ago, it had to be affordable and practical. In today's hi-tech world,if it ain't complicated and expensive, it ain't worth fooling with.
