PVC Pipe and Diesel Fuel

I have a fuel oil furnace in my house and the tank is in the basement. I want to add a filler pipe through the wall so I don't have to put a hose through the window. Will PVC pipe stand up to the diesel? Trying to avoid the hassle of cutting and threading 2" steel pipe. Also adding a vent line with a whistler so the co-op guy knows its full.

For just the occasional use of filling the tank, I wouldn"t expect a problem. Check with your fuel supplier- are there any issues with static electricity like on some types of rubber hoses? That issue is real- I"ve seen the sparks from using the wrong kind on diesel. (Fueling at night)

You might want to check with you homeowner's insurance policy. Things like this, are just enough to void a claim.....

'are we really free"

Better check with the fuel supplier. You won't have saved any hassle or work if you do it in pvc and they refuse to fill it.

Good thinkin'. I'm worried if I call them and ask they won't
have a friggin' clue what I'm talking about though. Feels like
I'm gonna get the runaround. Best to find out though.

They'll understand, just explain clearly what you want to do. You might want to go one step above the secretary that answers the phone though.

If you know your delivery guy, I think I'd ask him.... he'll have real world experience if it's a good idea.

If it was me, I'd thread the pipe and be done. You might even be able to do alot of it with precut/threaded nipples, it'll cost more but you'll make up for it in time savings.

Don't get me wrong, I'm all about saving money, but this is something I wouldn't want to risk. If the fill pipe happens to break at a plastic joint, he'll fill your basement with fuel before he know's it's leaking.

Good luck either way.....

Better check with building inspector, I believe that BOCA code requires cast iron. Like Steve and Carol says it could give you a problem with insurance just at a time when you are counting on it. You can buy prethreaded nipples. I helped a friend do one a few months ago.

3 years ago a oil delivery person delivered to the wrong house and put 350 gallons of #2 heating oil in the basement of the house. Very costly! The filler was not connected to anything!!. Imagine the suprise. I would use galvanized pipe. Jim

I know a couple of oil companies, one was a friends, another a long time outfit we bought from, you would be surprised at the occurrences of bogus fill pipes at the wrong address, what a mess, and waste, always said the driver should hear that whistling sound from vent, which I thought would tip you off that there is no tank.

I am a fuel delivery man and I would not fill that tank. there is too much that can go wrong and Im sure its illegal. If the tank was underground and only had a short piece of pipe not a prob, but because its in a basement, no way!

Know of a wrong address delivery, like Billy relates. The address had removed tank after converting to natural gas, fill tube was left inplace. Several hundred gallons of fuel oil on a basement floor is not something you want.

Make some measurments and take the pipe to a plumbing shop. They use a power threader.I have done a lot of pipe cutting and threading by hand.At 73 Ill hire it done.
