tractor with a bad motor....

hey folks,
I'm seriously considering trading my tractor (or getting it a buddy  )...
Neighbor kid bought one with a bad motor. They were using it and oil started blowing out the dipstick hole (??). Anyway, he got it, put all new piston, ring, and sleeve kits in, new rod/main bearings (crank checked by machine shop), gaskets/seals. Was still building up crankcase pressure and he took the head in to the shop and they found a crack. Got another head, shop is reworking it now. That is no different (parts wise) than a factory reconditioned engine is it? Trans, electric, brakes, mower, tin, and everything else on the tractor is solid with inspection and ready to insure and put plates on. Any reason NOT to take advantage of it?

Dave I guess it would depend on how much you trust the local kids ability. Not knowing the kid alarms go off about the head. I'm very picky when I do an engine and if there is any question with something It's checked before it's reassembled. If he missed the head what else did he miss? Now If you know more than your posted it may be a good deal. Like if you know the block was checked and the kid just missed the head problem......

This is the big neighbor kid that fixs your baler, etc after you break/disable/stop them from working due to silly actions? And they work perfect the next day? May as well test drive it after it"s put together- otherwise harness break those hay burners you have and get long tongues for your wagons- remember Amish/Anababist/Mennonites came from close by. (minor Teasing Alert!) RN

Go for it Dave, just like horses and grand kids, always room for one more. That's why I have 8 tractors now (on 2 acres of land I own) also have 8 grand kids but they're not all on the 2 acres, don't think Grandpa could handle that. LOL

Well, how many tractors does a man need ? Just one more, and what's need got to do with it ? LOL

I keep calling him a kid, but he's 31 years old. Went to school for ag mechanics, done his apprenticeship (2 years) in a ag/forestry equipment garage and is I guess what would be called a journeyman level (??). He is a 6 month class and a couple tests away from being a Master at the trade. Not too worried about him missing the head. He probably forgot more than a lot of folks know about fixing this stuff. I get a kick out of going to his place and seeing something scattered out in two rooms and not a book in sight. Ask him about it and most always get "I saw the book in school, don't need it now"....
One of them guys that if you ask him about a problem, he tells you the solution (or possible solutions) based on the problem and don't mention the make/model.
