Long 460 and Massey 135

i am looking at a 1976 Long 460 Diesel. The front seal is leaking a small bit. what would b a fair price for this tractor? the paint is in ok condition. Also i have a massey ferguson 135 knocking in the engine really bad and we think it is a sleeve. what should it cost to fix this

That Massey is going to cost way too much to fix without an accurate diagnosis of the problem. Sleeves do not normally cause a knocking sound; a knocking sound usually indicates a bad rod bearing. You may or may not need a complete overhaul.

Not enough info. What engine is in the Massey? What condition is the Long in, especially tires? Where abouts are you? Sam

i drove the long today and it runs great tires on back are great front not so good paint looks ok bu nothing that cant be fixed

I would overhaul the Massey 135. Even if the overhaul costs as much as the Long"s asking price. You would know what you had. Plus the Massey 135 with a fresh overhauled diesel engine would be worth much more than the Long ever will be worth. Parts are much easier to get too.

Sorry about that. My advice is still the same. Even more so now. A MF 135 gas is a real easy engine to over haul. The kits are very reason able. The sell a pretty good one on this site.

Specify when ordering rod and main bearing sizes in comments section of order form. Cost of this VERY Complete kit is $579.61

A rod bearing kit is only $68.10. So find your current problem first.

The knock you are having could very well be a loose rod bearing cap. It was a common issue. Just drop the oil pan and look You might just need a new set of rod bearing and a little tune up to be good to go.

The fact of the matter is that the Long is just not a good investment in the long Haul. If you want to up date. Still check out your problem. If it is a cheap fix then trade it in on a better tractor. Which in that size would be a newer MF or Ford.

The knock is near the front of the engine, changes with rpm and sounds like its from lower down in the block. Also when this knocking occured all of a sudden it created a dead miss.
