brush hogged off a hay field and these things are sprouting back , they must like hot and dry weather what can i spray on them that will kill them ? i was gona spot spray them with atv sprayer and round up.

tordon; only thing i dislike about no-till is locust trees. I use tordon with great success. word to the wise; planting beans into a field that you heavily spot spray with tordon should be avoided, if possible. it will cut your yield but sometimes it can't be avoided.

Yep they can be a problem. Best way is to pull them up. Then take them and burn them. Even a green thorn from one can turn into a tree if it is pushed into the ground. Plus they are hard on tires. Just had to replace a tire on the wives car due to my idiot neighbor and a thorn from one.

trouble with them is also every time a root gets close to the surface the dang thing sprouts.i dont even know if spraying would kill one, dont think you could get enough spray on little sprout to kill the root system.only way ive really seen is to just keep them mown, and get a ripper of some type to kill the root.they can grow on some of the worst ground though, and believe it or not they are a legume that builds up the soil.someone told me one time that you could fertilize around them with nitrogen real heavy and kill them, just like alfalfa.but i havent tried it.

Stump spraying with tordon is what I did. Worst thing I could of done.

Failed or Ineffective Practices
Tordon RTU (picloram) is a premixed general use herbicide labeled for cut-surface applications only. This herbicide kills treated black locust stems, but vigorous sprouts develop from roots. Stump treatments that do not effectively control the tree's root system may necessitate several additional years of foliar treatment of root sprouts. Tordon RTU has high soil mobility and persistence, and is no longer labeled for use on sandy soils.

Girdling kills the black locust stem that is girdled, but it does not prevent the formation of suckers.

Mowing areas around mature trees where seed pods have dropped seems to promote seed germination.

Fire kills the main stems but prolific sprouting results.

Tordon will kill them IF it is applied to the stumps immediately after they trees are cut.

Brush killer will kill the sprouts but not the roots. They will continue to sprout from the roots for years.

I simply mow them continuously. Eventually, the roots will die but it will take several years, perhaps 5 or 6.

It will kill the stump, not the suckers. I sprayed them til they were glowing blue with the chainsaw still idling next to 'em. I didn't get any growth from the stump, suckers all around though.

Remedy = Trycopyr

I sprayed a few just yesterday with brush killer. Don't know yet if it's going to work.

I dug out the stumps and the roots keep trying to pop up in my yard. I hit them with gas in a spray bottle and that seemed to stop them.

when they are little, up to 6ft i use GRAZON, but you have to hit every single leaf. it works on maltifora rose also. with a little crop oil or diesel mixed in. bigger ones you have to cut an use tordon.

Brush killer, broad leaf weed killer,2-4-D,2-4-5T,silvex will all do a creditable job in bermuda, biaha, fescue and other grass hay when properly used. All legumes, alfalfa, clovers, broad leaf plants will be killed and reseeding will not be possiable for 2 or 3 years. On the bright side, the meadow will yield 50%+ more tonnage the following couple years because of niteratgion left behind by the locust roots.

I'm with TX Jim. Spray stumps with 50/50 diesel and Remedy. Nothings come back yet. I keep some mixed up in a garden sprayer.

I've had no problem killing locust sprouts and saplings with strong (4 or 5% solution)of glyphosate sprayed on foliage. No regrowth from under ground roots. Killed some 8 inch diameter trees by girdling them with hatchet and applying full strength glyphosate to the cuts in the bark. Again no sprouts from roots.

A friend of mine that had lived in W Texas(lot of Mesquite trees) told me just the other day instead of diesel use water with a couple of ounces of dish soap with Remedy. I'm going to try that next time I spray Mesquite sprouts which won't be long as they're coming up as if they've been planted. This drought brings them to LIFE.

grove will stimulate it to "Preserve itself" by
putting up suckers from the interwoven intergrown
