Ford 8N runs too slow

I have a '48 Ford 8N, recently cleaned up and field-restored for mainly mowing my 5 acre lot. New points, plugs, coil, etc. Starts and runs smoothly. My problem is that in 4th gear I could beat it in a race walking. My neighbor has one that he runs with his bush hog and he says he never goes above 2nd because it's too fast. Without a speedometer or a tachometer, I'm guessing I'm going about 5mph in 4th with no load- smooth as all get-out, but slow as molasses. Any ideas where to look first?

Thanks for the info/link. I thought you were crazy, but I just went out to my property and fired it up. It has a Howard transmission, if the pick on the link is accurate. Lever on the right by the dipstick, in one position, tractor creeps along; other position, the thing flies. Thanks again. It"s like putting pants on and finding a $20 bill in the pocket. That really adds to the charm of my tractor; also functional since I have 8 speeds not 4.

No it would be more like putting on your pants and finding 5 100 dollar bills in a pocket if not twice that. Those Howard aux transmissions are few and far between and also make your tractor one of the few 8N that will handle a tiller

That Howard is not only rare and worth a bit of coin, it is also very fragile. It is NOT a low range. It was designed only to slow the Ford enough to run the Howard Rotovator.

You know,I didn't even know those things existed til a few weeks ago. All I ever knew about was the Sherman overdrive, but I saw a 9N at a yard sale in Tennessee and when I asked the owner about the Sherman,he said that one was an underdrive.

"I thought you were crazy"

Well, GEEZ, THANKS for the "vote of confidence"!

Glad to hear the info I posted solved the mystery!

I KNEW if your's was a serious post there HAD to be an aux tranny involved, for as slow as you said it traveled!
